Paying for College

The most important step to obtain money to pay for college is to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) OR the California Dream Act (if appropriate). If you are unsure which is the one for you, ask your counselor.

2025-2026 FBHS General Scholarship Information

What is the FBHS General Scholarship Application and why should I fill it out?

Preparing and submitting the FBHS General Scholarship Application will help you in a few ways:

It will put you into consideration for scholarships through the FBHS Scholarship Committee (if you meet other eligibility requirements for those scholarships).
Many local organizations use the FBHS General Scholarship Application as their application. They may ask you to make a new cover page and include it with the rest of your FBHS Scholarship Application packet. Please follow all submission instructions listed for each scholarship.
You will be able to use pieces of this application packet for other scholarship applications (such as your resume, transcript, and letters of recommendation).

Please note, completing an FBHS General Scholarship Application does not guarantee that you will be awarded a scholarship. Not submitting an application ensures that you won’t!

The initial deadline of Jan 14, 2026 has passed but we are still accepting applications.

Complete each of the application components below and save the entire scholarship packet as one PDF file- NOT a Google Doc.

Once completed, email the PDF as an attachment to: scholarships@fbusd.us

Components of the application:

Cover Page (click here for template)
Make a copy and replace Timmy Timberwolf with YOUR name. Please do not put a picture of yourself on your cover page.
Application Form (click here for the fillable form)
Make a copy and complete the form. Form must be typed, handwritten forms will not be accepted. There are two options for adding signatures to the form, see instructions here.
Résumé (click here for sample)
Must be limited to one page. You should have a current résumé as part of your Senior Project portfolio.
Essay
Tips: Read your essay aloud to yourself or someone else, make necessary edits, and then request an English teacher proofread it with you; your final essay should be flawless.

Essay Part 1:
Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

AND

Essay Part 2:
In addition to the above, on a separate page, write a paragraph discussing what you see yourself doing immediately after high school as well as your long-term goals.

Two letters of Recommendation

You need 2 letters (Letters are limited to one page each):
- - - 1- from a high school teacher or school counselor
    - 1- from another adult (not family)
The process to request a letter:
1-2 weeks before you need it, ask (don’t assume!) your intended letter writer to write a general scholarship letter for you. If they say yes, provide them with your completed Brag Sheets to assist them in discussing how wonderful you are.
Do not include Brag Sheets in scholarship applications. The role of the Brag Sheet is to help the letter writer know more about you.
Senior Brag Sheet (English) or Senior Brag Sheet (Spanish): You fill this out about yourself. Make a copy, complete, then give to the person you are asking to write a letter for you.
Family Brag Sheet (English) or Family Brag Sheet (Spanish): Your family member fills this out about you. Make a copy, have a family member complete, then give to the person you are asking to write a letter for you.

Redwood Timber Company Scholarship

To be eligible applicant will:

Enroll in a 2- year or 4- year college/university
Preference will be given to those planning to major in a field of study with an emphasis on Natural Resource Sciences. This includes but is not limited to Forestry, GIS, Botany, Biology, Fisheries, Watershed Management, Marine Science, etc.

To apply:

Create a cover page titled “Redwood Timber Company Scholarship”.
Replace the FBHS General Scholarship App cover page with the new one.
Save as a PDF.

Torkelson Scholarship

Given by the The Press Democrat Guild for students pursuing journalism or a related field.

Criteria/Eligibility:

Students in Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino and Napa counties
Pursuing journalism and related fields in college and beyond.
Applicants must be rising college freshmen [current high school seniors] or college students, and funds will go directly to their community college or university
Winners will be selected on the basis of the student’s ability and promise as a journalist, interest shown in journalism programs and financial need.

North Coast Builders Exchange

Students entering or continuing enrollment in a university, college, community college or trade school for the 2026-2027 school year are eligible to apply for the NCBE Scholarship Program.

The program is open to:

Anyone pursuing a career in construction (including, but not limited to, architecture, engineering, surveying, construction management, and the building trades)
Spouses, children or grandchildren of the owners, partners, officers or employees of an NCBE member.
Spouses, children, or grandchildren of NCBEConstruction Hall of Fame inductees.

Applicants must also meet the following GPA minimum requirements:

• Graduating high school applicants - minimum GPA of 2.0 on high school transcripts.

• Currently enrolled college students - minimum GPA of 2.0 on college transcripts

• Vocational/Trade school students - Records of enrollment, grade reports, or similar records of progress should be included with applications

Mendocino Masonic Lodge #179 Scholarship

This scholarship is in Honor of David & Mary Danchuk

Requirements:

This scholarship is for a student who is a High School Seniors who graduates in Spring 2026 with plans to enroll in Fall 2026 as a full-time student at a 2 or 4-year college, university or accredited trade school. Applicants must be a resident of Mendocino County. This is for a student with financial need.

Noyo Women For Fisheries

To be eligible you must be a descendant of someone who is currently earning or has earned their living in the fishing industry. You must have been involved in school and community activities, show any financial need, and be academically qualified, i.e. suggested GPA of above 2.5. This is for a student planning to attend a college or trade school.

To apply:

Make a cover page titled Noyo Women for Fisheries, that includes your name and Fort Bragg High School, Class of 2026 to replace your FBHS General Scholarship cover page.
Write a cover letter with detailed paragraph that tells whom in the fishing industry provides your financial support and how that person is connected to the fishing industry. For example, tell if the person is an employee of a fish processing plant or fishing boat owner, etc.
Print each page of your FBHS General Scholarship Application, including the application page, essay, resume, letters of recommendation and transcript. Assemble in order with the cover letter just between the cover page and the application page.

Neva Cannon Memorial

Eligible students will pursue a career in Education.

The Neva Cannon Memorial Scholarship is in honor of her excellence and perseverance as a Fort Bragg grammar school educator and first principal of Redwood Elementary. She was also a Native Daughter Member.

Steps for Change Scholarship

The Steps For Change Scholarship is an income and merit-based scholarship awarded up to three high school seniors applying to a college or university with a $2,000 scholarship each to pursue their career goals. Students from low-income families are recognized for their capacity to lead and commitment to making a significant impact on communities. Award recipients must display academic excellence, exude passion in empowering the community, and exemplify a desire for continuous personal growth.

To be eligible:

Be of legal status in the United States
Be a current high school senior expecting to graduate in 2026
Have been accepted and will be entered an accredited college in Fall of 2026
Have a household income of less than $64,300 in 2025*
Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5

To Apply:

A completed scholarship application.
An official transcript of academic marks.
One letter of recommendation shall be written on an official letter and signed from and sent by a faculty member or community leader.
Please be sure to state your full name at the beginning of the video and submit the video via email to scholarships@wealthbyhealth.org. Applicant may also upload video to YouTube and send us a link to the video.

Mendocino Coast Jazz Society

For a student who will be pursuing further education in music, and has an interest in Jazz.

Prepare a cover page for the Mendocino Coast Jazz Society Scholarship.
Write a brief cover letter explaining your scholastic and, especially, your musical activities; also discuss in some detail your financial needs for college.
If not already in your essay, write a short paragraph about how Jazz has affected your life, and what part it might play in your future.
Print the documents listed above AND application page, resume, essay, and letters of recommendation, and transcript from your FBHS scholarship application.
