Paying for College

The most important step to obtain money to pay for college is to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) OR the California Dream Act (if appropriate). If you are unsure which is the one for you, ask your counselor.

What is the FBHS General Scholarship Application and why should I fill it out?

Preparing and submitting the FBHS General Scholarship Application will help you in a few ways:

It will put you into consideration for scholarships through the FBHS Scholarship Committee (if you meet other eligibility requirements for those scholarships).
Many local organizations use the FBHS General Scholarship Application as their application. They may ask you to make a new cover page and include it with the rest of your FBHS Scholarship Application packet. Please follow all submission instructions listed for each scholarship.
You will be able to use pieces of this application packet for other scholarship applications (such as your resume, transcript, and letters of recommendation).

Please note, completing an FBHS General Scholarship Application does not guarantee that you will be awarded a scholarship. Not submitting an application ensures that you won’t!

Must be limited to one page. You should have a current résumé as part of your Senior Project portfolio.
Essay
Tips: Read your essay aloud to yourself or someone else, make necessary edits, and then request an English teacher proofread it with you; your final essay should be flawless.

Essay Part 1:
Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

AND

Essay Part 2:
In addition to the above, on a separate page, write a paragraph discussing what you see yourself doing immediately after high school as well as your long-term goals.

Two letters of Recommendation

You need 2 letters (Letters are limited to one page each):
- - - 1- from a high school teacher or school counselor
    - 1- from another adult (not family)
The process to request a letter:
1-2 weeks before you need it, ask (don’t assume!) your intended letter writer to write a general scholarship letter for you. If they say yes, provide them with your completed Brag Sheets to assist them in discussing how wonderful you are.
Do not include Brag Sheets in scholarship applications. The role of the Brag Sheet is to help the letter writer know more about you.
Senior Brag Sheet (English) or Senior Brag Sheet (Spanish): You fill this out about yourself. Make a copy, complete, then give to the person you are asking to write a letter for you.
Family Brag Sheet (English) or Family Brag Sheet (Spanish): Your family member fills this out about you. Make a copy, have a family member complete, then give to the person you are asking to write a letter for you.

The Cesar E. Chavez Foundation Scholarship Program is designed to support young leaders from Northern California

Eligibility Requirements

Must have a permanent address in Northern California
Minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) for high school students
Minimum of 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) for undergraduate and graduate students
Plan to enroll full-time in an accredited, public or not-for-profit, four-year university, or graduate school in the US for the 2026-2027 academic year
Must be a US Citizen, Permanent Legal Resident, DACA, or other Eligible Non-Citizen (as defined by FAFSA)
Complete and submit the 2026-2027 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The program is open to students of all races that identify as being of Hispanic heritage

California Association of Winegrape Growers Foundation

The California Association of Winegrape Growers Foundation is offering a minimum of six scholarships in 2025 to graduating high school seniors. Students may study the subject of their choice.

To be eligible:

Applicants must be a high school senior graduating in 2026.
Only children with a parent or legal guardian employed by a California vineyard during the 2025-2026 winegrape growing season are eligible to apply.
Children whose parent or guardian is a California winegrape grower may request a waiver from this eligibility requirement based upon financial need.

PG&E offers scholarships to help students thrive and innovate in college. Multiple scholarships are available.

PG&E ERG & ENG Scholarships

These scholarships are designed for students committed to specific communities or causes. Scholarships are open to all students and have no gender or race requirements. Students are encouraged to apply for more than one or all eligible scholarships.

PG&E Better Together STEM Scholarships
Applicants must:

Plan to enroll as an undergraduate at a four-year college or university in California or a Historical Black College or University (HBCU) in the U.S.
Be pursuing a degree in one of the following STEM disciplines:
- Engineering (e.g. electrical, mechanical, industrial, environmental construction, power and/or energy)
- Computer Science/Information Systems

Soroptimist International Noyo Sunrise Shine Award

Criteria:

This scholarship is designed to help young women who are overcoming obstacles or facing barriers to obtaining higher education
Higher weight will be given to applications from girls seeking a career that can fulfill the Soroptimist mission to help themselves and other women achieve economic empowerment.
Academic excellence is not a criterion for this particular award.

Mendocino College Foundation

As with the FBHS General Application, completing this one application enters you into competition for a variety of scholarships.

Please allow at least an hour to complete this application; that sounds like a lot of time, but it will be well worth it.

FBHS graduates have a history of great success with the Mendocino College scholarships.

Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society

To be eligible:

Portuguese descent
Graduating high school senior
Grade point average of 3.5 or better
Must reside in the geographic location from the Oregon border south to counties north of San Francisco Bay, plus counties contiguous to Sacramento County (San Joaquin, El Dorado, Placer and Yolo, and east to the Nevada border). American Institute of Architects Redwood Empire

Administered by 10,000 Degrees. You will need to submit the 10,000 Degrees application to be eligible for this scholarship.

BASIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Hagan Scholarship Foundation

2026 Spring Scholarship Application

Eligibility Criteria. No Exceptions.

Must attend a high school located in the United States.
Must be in the high school graduating class.
All students who meet the eligibility criteria can apply regardless of nationality or citizenship.
Must have achieved an unweighted 3.50 CGPA based on a 4.0 Grading Scale.
Must provide a current copy of the applicant’s High School Transcript.
Must provide an “unsealed” Letter of Recommendation. If an unsealed LOR is not available from an educator, provide from a non-educator.
Must enroll in an eligible four-year College or University the first fall semester following high school graduation.
The scholarship cannot be used to attend a community college, junior college, or online institution.
Must maintain a four year or less graduation schedule, or complete the equivalent of a four year degree if in a professional program.
Must work 240 hours from January 1, 2026 until September 1, 2026 to be eligible for a fall semester disbursement. Work must be regularly scheduled non-family employment performed under supervision for compensation. Employment can be full-time or part-time.
Parents Adjusted Gross Household Income reported for 2024 Federal Income Tax Purposes must not have exceeded $125,000.
U.S. Citizens selected as Finalists must provide the first two pages of their FAFSA Summary. The FAFSA Summary must show the SAI.
Non U.S. Citizens selected as Finalists must provide Proof of non-U.S. Citizenship. Copy of Foreign Passport or Green Card.
Must apply for Federal and State grants if eligible.

This is an extremely competitive award; recommended top 10 ranking; 3.75+ GPA.

To be eligible for:

High School senior students preparing to graduate who attend either a Mendocino or Humboldt County high school. The Company reserves full discretion in determining qualification of school.

Mendocino Coast Environmental Scholarship

To be eligible:

Planning on entering a post-secondary institution, whether a two or four-year accredited college/university, or a trade/technical school, with a planned emphasis on environmental studies, along with:

Have minimum 3.0 GPA
Completed or be enrolled in at least one science class or practicum in addition to

that required for graduation

Have been a California resident for at least one school year by the time of the

award, residing in or attending school in the coastal region of Mendocino County.

Career goals should relate to:

communicating, interpreting, and researching preserving nature's wonder by way of seeking degrees in environmental science, forestry, wildlife and fisheries biology, parks and recreation, park management, environmental law and public policy, environmental engineering, natural resource planning, environmental art/writing and similar environmental areas.

Mendocino Coast Historical Society

Denise S Stenberg Memorial

Mendocino Coast high school seniors or students at the coast branch of Mendocino Community College who are taking history classes or have an interest in pursuing history as an educational goal.

Requirements:

Have a GPA of at least 3.0 and evidence an interest in history as an academic subject.
Proof of enrollment in classes will be required prior to release of scholarship funds.
For high school students, evidence of an interest in history (local or global) can be determined from the student’s application essay as well as supporting testimony from a school teacher or counselor.
Evidence of an interest in history can also be demonstrated by volunteering 10 hours with the Fort Bragg-Mendocino Coast Historical Society, serving as a docent at the Guest House Museum in Fort Bragg, assisting with maintenance of the Society’s archives, as well as other projects.

California Alarm Association Youth Scholarship Program

In 2026, the CAA Youth Scholarship Program will offer over $20,000 in funds to children of active-duty peace officers, firefighters, and paramedics in the State of California.

To be eligible, applicants must:

be at least 15 years of age and not older than 20.
be a graduating high school senior who will receive a diploma from an accredited high school located within California. Home-schooled applicants and those attending military or boarding schools are also eligible to apply.
be accepted for admission to an accredited four-year college or university, matriculating the following year.
have a father, mother, or natural guardian (“parent”) who meets the following qualifications:
- The Applicant’s school must be located in California where the parent is a full-time active employee OR within a 100-mile radius of where the parent is a full-time active employee;
- Parent must be a full-time paid, active-duty law enforcement officer, firefighter, paramedic, or EMT (public sector only). Parent may also be a volunteer member of a fire department. Children of administrative staff do not qualify;
- Children of DHS, FBI, and other non-first responder federal employees do not qualify; and
- Children of reserve, part-time, or retired officers or fire personnel do not qualify.

Extracurricular Activities

Students who have extraordinary circumstances in their lives as well as students who may not have the chance to attend college without financial assistance are encouraged to apply. The committee is looking for students who understand and exemplify the meaning of “hard work.”

Students who are chosen as recipients of the Splawn Scholarship have a chance to re-apply once yearly while in college. Renewals take place in the fall each year.

Jack & Phyllis Perkins Fort Bragg Football Scholarship

This scholarship is for a student who has played football in high school.

Student is to be in good standing who plans to continue their education to either junior college, trade school or four-year schooling.

The student is to write a short essay about what Fort Bragg Football means to them.

Redwood Timber Company Scholarship

To be eligible applicant will:

Enroll in a 2- year or 4- year college/university
Preference will be given to those planning to major in a field of study with an emphasis on Natural Resource Sciences. This includes but is not limited to Forestry, GIS, Botany, Biology, Fisheries, Watershed Management, Marine Science, etc.

To apply:

Create a cover page titled “Redwood Timber Company Scholarship”.
Replace the FBHS General Scholarship App cover page with the new one.
Save as a PDF.
Submit application via email to: Chris Hannon at Redwood Timber Company channon@redwoodtimberco.com with “FBHS 2025 RTC Scholarship” in the subject line.
