Singing Olympics...with Instruments!?
- For instrumentalists in band or orchestra, you can improve your intonation (playing IN TUNE, ON PITCH) by using these exercises! It will take some thought on your part but I know you can handle a challenge!
- Percussionists and Piano players can play these lessons and challenges on their bell kit or piano.
- If you play a woodwind, brass or string instrument, try a pattern of SINGING the syllables, SAYING your note names (see grid below) and PLAYING the example on your instrument.
It is pretty incredible that you can improve your intonation (playing in tune) on your instrument by being able to sing and internalize or "hear in your brain" each note before you play it!
- SPECIAL CHALLENGE FOR BRASS PLAYERS: Try BUZZING THE NOTES ON YOUR MOUTHPIECE INSTEAD OF SINGING. OR, add buzzing to the process: SING through the first time, SAY the note names on pitch (see grid below)the second time, BUZZ the notes on your mouthpiece the third time and finally, PLAY it on your instrument. You may need to pause the video after each example so that you have time to do all of those things.
- Each of these lessons uses C as "Do". However, some instruments play in other keys. The videos will show "C" as Do but you can use the grid to change the key to match the scale that you have learned to play on your instrument in band or orchestra. Pick a row and challenge yourself! Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!
Select the "row that you know" below and line-up the notes from your row with each Solfege syllable. Then, using the lessons/challenges below the grid try the "singing, saying, playing" pattern or the "Sing, Say, Buzz, Play" pattern (for brass players):
Lesson 1: Start Training Your Ears
Lesson 2: Review and More Tones
Lesson 3: Let the Rhythm Begin
Lesson 4: Putting it Together!
