How to Apply for Teacher Certification in Kentucky
If you’re finishing your education degree and ready to become a certified teacher in Kentucky, here’s exactly how to do it—step by step!
This includes coursework, field experiences, and student teaching.
When you graduate, your university’s certification officer will verify that you’ve met all program requirements.
Visit the ETS Praxis website and select Kentucky to see which tests you need.
You’ll need to send your scores to the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) and your college/university.
Keep a copy of your score report for your records!
On the Go Teach KY site, click on the KECS login button.
This is where you’ll submit your certification application and track its progress.
Use your personal (not school) email address—you’ll need this account for your entire teaching career.
Before you start your application, have these ready:
Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended.
Praxis score reports.
Verification form from your college (often called CA-1 or EPSB recommendation). Your university certification officer will complete and submit this electronically once you finish your program.
Once your college recommends you for certification:
Log in to your KECS account.
Select “Initial Certification” and complete the CA-1 application.
Upload your documents and pay the application fee.
The Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) will review your application, verify your documents, and issue your Kentucky Teaching Certificate! (It will take approximately two weeks. You can check the status on your KECS portal.)
You’ll get an email when your certificate is ready, and you can download and print it directly from your EPSB account.
Your initial certificate (Rank IV or V, depending on your degree) is valid for five years.
To renew, you’ll need to complete professional learning or additional coursework, but for now, just focus on getting that first one!
In Kentucky, candidates seeking teacher certification must meet Praxis testing requirements established by the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB). These include passing the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) exams, which assess reading, writing, and mathematics, unless exempted by qualifying ACT or GRE scores. In addition, candidates must pass the Praxis Subject Assessments specific to their intended certification area.
All required Praxis exams must be completed successfully before a candidate can be recommended for initial teacher licensure in Kentucky.

We have identified a few commonly used options to help you begin exploring what might work best for your learning style and needs. We encourage you to review multiple tools, compare features, and choose the resources that best support your preparation and confidence as you approach the Praxis exams.
