Paid Experiences

If you are choosing to pursue a paid internship with one of our partners, please read through the descriptions of each opening below. Please understand that most paid positions will give you the least amount of experience with the organization. If you are a paid employee, it's expected that you report to work and complete all tasks assigned.

Description: This paid internship will include boarding, yearling sales prep, mare and coal care, stall cleaning, facilities maintenance, grounds work.

Description: Pemberton's Greenhouses is a 6th generation family owned business in Lexington, KY that produces annual, seasonal, tropical and perennial plants. We are looking for a self-motivated, quick learner who wants to know more about the horticulture industry. A paid intern will assist in customer service, plant production and product delivery and be available to work 20 hours per week. To the extent possible, specific tasks will depend on the interests and career path of the intern.

Job Purpose:

A position which can often be a springboard for a long career in the horse industry, the groom is the individual who actually takes care of daily routine for the animals.

Responsibilities/Skills:

This is a position which benefits from a firm knowledge of thoroughbred horses, a teamwork attitude and independent, creative thinking.

Must Love the Animal -- Physical strength, love of the animal and attention to detail are quality aspects of a successful groom. A sense of personal responsibility is essential in a caretaker.

Regardless of the size of the establishment, a groom spends a lot of time hands on with the animals as well as receiving instructions from the barn foreman, assistant department mgr., assistant farm manager, and the farm manager.

Following feeding, cleaning & watering schedules

Basic horse care, bathing, brushing, clipping

Cleaning & maintaining of tack & equipment

Basic exercise and ground work

Assisting with breeding & foaling

Assisting vet & farrier

Following supplement & medication schedules

Basic grounds maintenance and repair

Sometimes requires the use of farm equipment, such as tractors.

Preferred Skills:

High School Diploma or GED

Any education or training in horse anatomy, care and training are always a bonus. As is the drive to use a groom position as the first rung in a horse career ladder.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit, walk and stand for extended periods of time.

Ability to push, pull or lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Ability to carry a minimum of 50 pounds

Ability to carry up to 150 pounds

Ability to work six 8-hour days.

General Utility Worker

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• May load and unload equipment from trucks

• Check in and check out fleet units

• Assist with minor repairs

• Maintain organization of lot

• May was equipment

• Operates appropriate powered cleaning equipment as required, potentially including a fork lift

• Create and maintain good communications (verbally and in writing) and relationships with other Company departments, branches, employees, vendors, and customers by addressing and resolving concerns quickly

• Cleans department/area as needed and required

• Lifts, carries, pushes or pulls objects or supplies averaging 40 pounds

• Keeps supervisor informed of inventory levels of janitorial supplies

• Required to work overtime if needed

• Recommend to manager ideas to improve the departments operating procedures or business practices and participate in and support continuous improvement of all related activities and processes

• Project a positive image by interacting with fellow employees, customers, and management in a cooperative, supportive, and courteous manner; display a professional attitude; comply with company dress code

Apprenticeships

Youth apprenticeships provide opportunities for high school students to experience, and gain skills in, a real work environment. Simultaneously, they give businesses a chance to inspire and develop a new generation of talent. Apprenticeships are designed for students who plan to remain with the employer beyond high school graduation.

Description: Apprentices will receive on-the-job training (OJT), as outlined below, for the Ag Equipment Technician or the Heavy Construction Mechanic. John Deere Tech curriculum may also be required, at the discretion of Meade Tractor. All OJT will be under the direct mentorship of a qualified Subject Matter Expert (SME) who shall be identified by Meade Tractor.

Description: Apprentices will provide quality general horse care, veterinary care, and assist with transportation by satisfactorily upkeeping facilities, abiding by industry standards for horse handling, and utilizing knowledge of equine behavior and health. An apprentice will engage in daily feeding, grooming, and health inspections of horses, perform routine maintenance of facilities and equipment, monitor behavior and health of horses, and maintain both horse and facility records. An apprentice will also be aware of and follow safety procedures applicable to the care and safety of both horses and other staff.
