The purpose for promoting this inclusiveness in our school was to bring students with and without disabilities together. Creating an environment of respect, acceptance, and understanding where each individual feels like they belong and contribute to their school community in their own way.
This process was a way to bring students together and learn how each can be a productive member of the school environment and in the future. After attending a professional development over the summer, I had the realization that inclusiveness within our school was a possibility. I loved the thought of students learning how to accept and understand within our school community as the building blocks to them being able to do it in the future. Whether it be in the workforce, community, or other societal events. Most believe acceptance and understanding is something we all know how to do, but this isn't always true. A lot of times that this is soft skills that need to be taught, modeled, and reinforced over and over again. The students having opportunities to explore and develop these skills can lead to them being able to apply these skills in the future.
