Spectrum published a news story on our program after interviewing me, one of my 2nd year students, Lyric Deatherage, and our industry partner John Meister from RunJumpDev. Lyric conducted research to design a real world PBL game design project. We lined up Lexington based game designer and animator Rafael Estrada as Lyric's client and Lyric worked with Rafa to develop animations and game assets for their collaborative game project "Final Judgement". Year 2 Dual Credit Advanced Game Developing and Publishing student Landon Bailey has earned certifications including Unity Digital Artist, Unity Programmer, and IC3. He has been working diligently on a 2D game title Anubis. He poured many hours into script editing in his game. He used ChatGPT to create the menu image along with assets from the Unity Asset store. Upon completing his demo, Landon navigated build settings in Unity, WebGL, Github, and Google Sites to learn how to export his finished game and embed it on a web page.
The results are in and our teams placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the Skills USA competition held at BCTC in Lexington, KY, on February 14. All three teams will now compete at state competition in Louisville during the week of March 24th, 2025.

John Meister, students, and game developers from the region joined Dr. K at Eastside on Tuesday, Dec 10th, for a Run Jump Dev meeting. This was the first of many meetings to come. RunJumpDev is a people-powered nonprofit created to grow and cultivate the local game development community in Kentucky. Seeded with raw passion for creating games, we host meetups, talks, and game jams to bolster our skills and connections.
RunJumpDev strives to raise local awareness of game industry concerns. We are committed to educating, promoting, and retaining local talent, as well as bringing new talent to the area, in an effort to strengthen the bonds between game developers. Game Design & Development teacher Dr. K aattended the Local Game Harvest in Louisville with many game developers from across the region. One of our industry partners, John Meister, was presented with a special award for his unwavering dedication and support for Louisvillemakesgames. John leads Lexington based Super Soul and Run Jump Dev. John and Rafa Estrada are members of our Eastside game design and development program advisory committee. Both developers offered demos of their games at the free event sponsored by Louisvillemakesgames, an organization of local game developers.
Rafael Estrada is a local artist, animator, and game developer who spoke with all Game Design & Development students over two days. He shared his story, his design process, and a free animation workshop he has been offering at the Marksbury Library. He develops 50 games per year! My students Jane Staed and Wyatt Robinson won 1st place for Interactive Application and Video Game Development at Skills USA Kentucky State competition in April, 2024. They represented Kentucky and Eastside Tech at the 2024 Skills USA Nationals in Atlanta in June, 2024, and earned 22nd place!! Check out their Spritesheet trailer for their game "To Hell and Back". Will Lam is a Senior Product Manager at Uken Games in Toronto. He joined our Advanced 3D Game Development class virtually at Eastside Tech in Lexington, KY, for a 50 minute question and answer session on April 12th, 2024. He inspired our students! Students posed many questions and Will offered keen insight, experience, and advice for my aspiring game designers and developers. The recording of our interview can be found on our YouTube.
