Finding Other Useful Books

Non-fiction books (and some literature) are often arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification system, using numbers to arrange them by subject. In the college we use the system within key topic areas for each subject. In many university libraries, all books will be found shelved by Dewey Decimal alone. The Social Matters Podcast - podcasts which look at social issues such as the impact of poverty on family life. Great for anyone wanting to go into social work.

Crime Tapes - Great to look at the study of Crime through Sociology and Criminology. Podcasts look at Gender and Crime and Media and Crime as well as Violence and Computer Games.

Combat Jack - a hip-hop podcast that also happens to be a great place for social justice conversations.

Intersection - podcasts which discuss intersectionality, which is the impact of many aspects such as class, gender and ethnicity on identity and inequality.

Backtalk - podcasts which debate issues that Feminists are interested in today such as Jessica Jones on Netflix.

Best of the Left From Dan Savage's reflections on why it's important for activists to make demands of mayors to questions about human nature and culture from listeners, this podcast will keep you engaged in social justice dialogue from a range of viewpoints.

AllSociology- podcasts covering a range of Sociological topics including social policy, theory and getting a job as a Sociologist.

Social Science Bites - Great for those who want to look at how Psychology and Sociology work together to understand influences on human behaviour and the important role that both play in understanding society today.

Radio 4 - a good place to find episodes which discuss current social issues and will host Feminists such as Germaine Greer on Woman’s Hour.

The Digital Sociology Podcast - Interviews with researchers of all areas of digital culture and society.

The Social Breakdown - breaks down the complexity of the world one topic at a time through a sociological lens.

Louis Theroux Documentaries (Netflix) - These documentaries select unusual, deviant case studies to focus on, which is especially true of 'Dark States’ which consists of three episodes about heroin users, sex trafficking and murder. Search for "Louis Theroux" to find more of his documentaries.

The Great Hack (Netflix) - Explores how a data company named Cambridge Analytica came to symbolise the dark side of social media in the wake of the 2016 U.S. presidential election… also references the use of data to sway Brexit votes… relevant to Unit 3 topic - Globalisation and Digital Communication

Explained (Netflix) - This enlightening series from Vox digs into a wide range of topics such as the rise of cryptocurrency, why diets fail, and the wild world of K-pop.

Timeshift - Mods, Rockers and Bank Holiday Mayhem (BBC Documentary) - This addresses the youth subcultures of the ‘Mods and Rockers’ and the way in which their deviance was exaggerated and reported in the media.

Stacey Dooley documentaries (BBC iPlayer) - Series of documentaries in which Stacey Dooley investigates current affairs issues affecting young people around the world.

Educating North Korea (BBC Panorama) - This TV show presents the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. It presents a look behind the unique school.

Dirty Money (Netflix) - A documentary series all about corporate crime.

Flint Town (Netflix) - a cop's eye perspective on the battle to reduce crime in Flint. Incorporates themes on crime, ethnicity and globalisation.

Mr Drew’s School For Boys - 4OD Documentary - Also available on Youtube - This Channel 4 TV show covers the journey of eleven boys with behavioural problems; whilst at a residential summer school… the education on offer is designed to inspire and encourage these students to engage with learning.

Benefits Britain – 4OD Dispatches Documentary - Also available on Youtube - Presents both a stereotypical but also, at times, realistic view into what life is like for some of the most deprived people in Britain. Relevant to studies covered in ‘The Media’ topic but also when examining social class inequality within the contemporary UK.

The Corporation - YouTube - Based on Joel Bakan’s bestseller The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, this 26-award-winning documentary explores a corporation’s inner workings.
