College Engineering Design and Development

Pre-Requisite requirements: Must have completed any 2 other PLTW Courses with a grade of C or higher

(Can be from engineering, computer science, and/or BioMed) ~OR~ Teacher recommendation and approval

Grade: 11 or 12

Materials required: Bring with you daily; Pen and Pencil, Chromebook

Lab Fee: $20 (this covers your EDD notebook, a hardcover leather bound professional notebook that you will keep)

Dual Credit through Mineral Area College - Students will have the option of taking this course for Dual Credit through Mineral Area College. The Dual Credit Course is Computer Aided Design/Drafting (TEC1300) This course can be used toward all 4 of the Engineering Tech Degrees that MAC offers. (MAC credit cost is $174 for 3 hours of credit)

Course Description:

This is it! The course you have been working toward for the last 3-4 years! EDD is the class that will require all your skills and you will probably learn some new ones along the way. The Design Process is the framework for this class. Its like the Design Process in other PLTW classes except its been hitting the gym and probably some PED's. It is like nothing you have seen before!

You will identify a real problem that you choose and work with a team to solve it. Your solution will include a professional engineering notebook, portfolio, and working/testable prototype. That's it! Sounds easy right? Well if you want to do things right and make a positive impact on the world with your solution its going to take dedication, hard work, and a lot of perseverance. You've got this. I'm here for moral support but this class is about students taking charge and calling the shots. You don't just have to convince me your idea is the best thing since sliced bread, you have to convince real consumers, potential clients, and professionals. Hello Shark Tank!

Additional content related to CADD (Computer Aided Drafting/Design) will be covered in this course with a focus on design for production. Students will have the option to apply for 3 hours of Dual Credit through MAC if they choose to do so. (Cost is $174) Students will also take the AutoCad certification exam with the potential to earn a industry recognized certificate.

Instruction Overview / Student Expectations:

PLTW “Courses” – All course materials will be delivered through PLTW’s system called “Courses”. Students will receive their login information on the first day of the course. The Engineering Design and Development course will be available the first day of the new school year, and instructions will be provided on how to navigate and access content from home.

Engineering Notebook – An high grade leather bound professional engineering notebook will be provided to all students. It is the expectation that all work for the course is completed in this notebook, whether it be an activity, project design work, research findings, or simply note taking. Notebooks will be checked at various points in the year, Engineering notebook standards (discussed in the Introduction to Engineering Design course, among others), general neatness / organization will be assessed. Even when working as a team, notebooks will be assessed on a individual student basis.

Common Assessments – Common Assessments will be given throughout the year and will be specific to the 6 major design process components presented in this course.

• Component 1 – Research – The Project Proposal

• Component 2 – Design – The Preliminary Design Review

• Component 3 – Prototype and Test – The Critical Design Review

• Component 4 – Evaluation of Project and Process

• Component 5 – Documenting and Presenting the Design Process

Each Component represents a section within the EDPPSR (Engineering Design Process Project Scoring Rubric) and will be your major grades for this class.

Re-evaluations of the components are allowed but following the guidelines described in the “Make-Up Work” component of this syllabus

Individual Scores will use the following breakdown;

Mastered 4 = 100%

Proficient 3 = 86%

Developing 2 = 76%

Beginning 1 = 66%

No Attempt 0 = 0%

End of Course Assessment – This course has no EOC. Rather, students will be expected to make a formal presentations of their work to a panel of people comprised of parents, advisors, peers, family, industry professionals, community members, etc. These presentations will happen during various points of the design and development process.

Grading – Course grade will reflect the Farmington High School grading scale and will be calculated from a semester total.

District Cell Phone Policy - “Using, displaying or otherwise improperly using cell phones, personal laptops or any other personal electronic devices during the regular school day, including instructional class time, class change time, meal times or instructional class time, unless the use is part of the instructional program, required by a district-sponsored class or activity, or otherwise permitted by the building principal (Excluding class change time or meal times for grades 9-12; with teacher permission for grades K-12).”

My Cell Phone Policy - There will typically be no need to have your cell phone out during class. If opportunities arise in class for you to use your cell phone as part of the activity or during "free time" students will be made aware prior to the event.

Having your phone out in class without permission will result in:

1- Warning

2- You will be required put your phone on my desk in the phone box (you get it back at the end of the class)

3- You will be required to put your phone on my desk in the phone box at the beginning of class every day for the next 5 days

4- You will be required to put your phone on my desk and can pick it up from the office at the end of the day

5- Office Referral

Failure to comply with these requests will result in immediate office referral for insubordination (refusing to follow the direction of the classroom teacher)
