Focus of Instruction

The Farmingdale Social Studies curriculum is rooted in the comprehensive standards established in the NYS Social Studies Framework.  These standards delineate the content and skills that are the focus of learning for our students for each grade level incrementally building toward college, career, and civic readiness by graduation.

At each grade level, students build their civic understanding and their mastery in the practices of historical reasoning rooted in the five key learning standards: History of the United States and New York, World History, Geography, Economics, Civics, Citizenship, and Government.  Students are challenged to evaluate, synthesize, and apply their learning to draw comparisons and conclusions.

For middle school and high school, opportunities to earn points toward the Seal of Civic Readiness are embedded in our coursework.  The Seal of Civic Readiness is a recognition upon graduation from high school that a student has demonstrated civic learning and civic participation.

For our high school students, there are opportunities to enroll in Advanced Placement and college credit courses as well as a variety of electives that can be selected in addition to the social studies courses required for graduation. Additional details and information can be found in our Curriculum Guide.
