The Diplomats fell 4-0 at No. 24 Swarthmore last season
The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (8-6, 5-2 CC) begins a light week of competition with just one mid-week matchup after splitting Centennial Conference results last week. They lost 2-1 hosting #17 Ursinus on Wednesday before earning a 4-1 win at Haverford on Saturday. The Diplomats will host #17 Swarthmore on Wednesday evening as they look to break a two-game skid against the Garnet.
Last Week
Franklin & Marshall were 1-1 in Centennial Conference games last week. In Wednesday's loss to #17 Ursinus, the Bears worked out to a 2-0 lead with a second-quarter goal and another moments into the 3rd quarter, holding F&M to zero shots in the first half to the Bears' seven. Caitlin Hoover brought the game back within one in the 36th minute, but the Diplomats were unable to find a leveler. Meghan Dole matched a season-high with 11 saves on 13 shots on goal. The Diplomats broke a 1-1 deadlock against Haveford with a three-goal fourth quarter for a 4-1 victory. Jessica Miller opened the scoring eight minutes into the game, while Haverford drew level six minutes into the second half. With less than six minutes to go, Hoover scored the game-winner off a Keira Boensch pass followed quickly by a Hannah Fitzgerald goal and converted Caroline Roschen penalty stroke to secure the win.
Last Time vs. Swarthmore
The Diplomats' 2023 Centennial Conference playoff run came to a close in a tightly contested 3-2 loss at #18 Swarthmore in the semifinal last season. Annie Malatesta opened scoring eight minutes into the game on a successful penalty strike, while Swarthmore's Katherine Kohn posted a goal apiece in the second quarter and third quarter to take 2-1 lead with 15 minutes to play. F&M made use of a penalty corner in the 49th minute with Caitlin Hoover scoring the game-tying goal. With four minutes to go, Swarthmore scored the game-winner of a penalty corner of their own. Dole saved eight shots in the game.
Swarthmore Team Preview
The #17 Garnet (9-6, 5-1) split results last week with a 2-0 win hosting Muhlenberg on Wednesday before falling 3-1 to #3 Williams in Sunday's non-conference finale. The win over Muhlenberg was the program's fourth straight, as Gabriella Vasquez and Katherine Kohn notched a goal each. Cassandra Conklin earned a shutout, as she faced just a shot on goal, and the Garnet defense allowed three total shots. Swarthmore ended the game by outshooting the Mules 15-3. Swarthmore was tied 1-1 against Williams heading into the fourth quarter, but Rams scored a pair of goals to hand the Garnet their first loss since October 2. Sophia Hitchingham had the team's lone goal, while Conklin saved seven of ten shots on target. Kohn is tied for the seventh-most goals (7) in the Centennial Conference, while Magdelana Jordan is tied for the sixth-most assists (4). In goal, Conlin is tied for the second-most shutouts (4) and holds the fourth-best goals against average (1.37).
