The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (5-5, 3-0 CC) returns home this week to take on Gettysburg and Muhlenberg at Tylus Field. The Bullets won just three games in 2022 and have already matched that total through eight contests this season. Muhlenberg enters the week on a two-game losing skid, including a 7-1 loss to Johns Hopkins. The Mules will first face Bryn Mawr before visiting the Diplomats.
Last Week
F&M continued conference play last week with wins over Dickinson and No. 16 Bryn Mawr, both of which were on the road. Between the two tilts, the Diplomats allowed just nine total shots and held both teams scoreless. Keira Boensch and Darby Klopp each scored against the Red Devils on Wednesday before Jessica Miller punched in the game winner against the Owls on Saturday. It was the fourth game winner of the season for Miller and fifth goal overall.
Following F&M's defensive efforts, Kat Thistlewaite was named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Coming off of a year in which she was tabbed the conference Rookie of the Year, Thistlewaite has helped the Diplomats limit their opposition to just one goal in the last four games.
Last Time vs. Gettysburg
F&M was led by a pair of goals from Darby Klopp and another from Sophie Carroll in a 3-1 defeat of the Bullets in 2022. Faith DiMantova and Kat Study each recorded an assist as well. Carroll struck first in the second quarter before Klopp scored both of her goals in the second half as the Diplomats outshot Gettysburg, 10-6. In goal, Sydney Lippe made five saves for the win.
Last Time vs. Muhlenberg
The 2022 meeting between F&M and Muhlenberg ended in a thrilling, 2-1 2OT win for the Diplomats. Faith DiMantova scored in the second quarter off of a pass from Amelia McCarthy to put F&M ahead 1-0, but Nicole Randazza tied the contest up less than two minutes into the second half. After nearly 45 scoreless minutes, Carolina Riley found a loose ball and buried it into the cage to give the Diplomats the win. Overall, F&M outshot the Mules, 29-5 and put 13 shots on goal.
Gettysburg Team Preview
The Bullets have yet to win a conference game this season, losing all three Centennial matchups thus far. Most recently, Gettysburg was defeated 4-1 by Muhlenberg which was the third straight loss for the Bullets. Over the course of that losing streak, Gettysburg has been outscored 8-2. There have been 11 different goal scorers for the Bullets on the year, but just one has scored multiple times in Hailey Rhine (3). In goal, Emilia Saccento has started all nine games with a 0.691 save percentage and a 1.92 GAA.
Muhlenberg Team Preview
The Mules have been on a losing streak of their own recently, falling to Ursinus and Johns Hopkins in back-to-back games. Muhlenberg has allowed 11 goals in that stretch, including seven to the Blue Jays in Saturday's loss. Prior to the skid, the Mules had won four of five and had reached above .500 for the first time this season. In its Centennial opener, Muhlenberg topped Gettysburg, 2-1. Just four Mules have scored this season with Abba Diglio leading the way with seven goals. Grace Leard has struggled in goal, however, allowing almost two goals a game.
