I was walking home from school and looking through the windows of other peoples houses feeling sorry for myself . It had been a cold winter, I was still wearing that coat I got from two years ago. It was too small and had holes in the armpits but it was all I had. While looking through the windows one caught my eye. It was a warmly lit house with a brown cat laying on a chair in what appeared to be the living room. I thought about how warm it must be in there, much more different than the orphanage with the drafts of cold air. I checked my watch and realized my mom would get worried if I wasn’t back soon. I sped up my pace to a jog. That night I dreamed about the cat. I dreamed that me and the cat were both in that warm house together watching the snow come down outside. I woke up when Mr. Crab shook me awake at five am to clean my room. It was still dark out when Mr,crab pushed me out the door. The snow had stopped and left a good 5 inches on the ground. I started for school, while looking through every window (again feeling sorry for myself) I saw the same cat. I snuck up to the window and peered in. A lady was staring back at me. I stumbled back and tripped over a bush. I got up and ran the rest of the way to school. The bell rang announcing lunch but I didn't go to the cafeteria instead I headed to the house with the cat. I arrived at the house and peered through the window again. The lady was sitting in a big leather recliner with the cat on her lap. She looked up and saw me. I watched as she got up and went to the door. She opened it and led me inside. She offered me some tea and then started talking “ I’ve noticed you watching my cat recently” she said I didn't respond. She asked why I wasn’t in school and I told her it was because we had a half day which was a complete lie. Then she said that I could come by any time to hang out with her cat. I took her up on that offer and started showing up every day after school. I loved hanging out with her and her cat. There was also the benefit of warmth. We would share stories and I even learned that she used to be a war medic and her name was Dolly. Eventually I told her how I was an orphan and about how cold the orphanage was. It was a sunday in early april when Mr.Crab came into my room and yelled “rise and shine kid someone here to see you. I was confused because I never had visitors so I rushed downstairs. And there standing in the lobby was dolly. She opened her mouth and said the greatest words Ive ever heard “want to be adopted?” “yes” I screamed and ran to her”. That day I walked out and never looked back .Now I have my own room with no drafts and I get tea and cookies every day.
