All rising sophomores will read two short stories to prepare them to explore dystopias (futuristic, broken societies) in the fall:

• Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas"
• Ken Liu's "The Perfect Match"

Then, students should complete this "moments sheet" for each story. During the first week of school, students will write an essay in class using their notes. Hard copies of the "moments sheet" may be picked up at Durfee High School upon request.

All honors sophomores must also choose 1 of the following 4 books to read — whichever looks most exciting:

• Ready Player One — Ernest Cline
• The Children of Bone and Blood — Tomi Odeyemi
• Internment — Samira Ahmed
• We Set the Dark on Fire — Tehlor Kay Mejia

Then, students should complete the "moments sheet" for the novel they chose. Hard copies will be available upon request for pickup at school as well. During the first week of school, students will write an essay in class using their notes.
