All rising first-years will read two short stories to prepare them to write vividly and creatively in the fall:

• Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game"
• Frank Stockton's "The Lady or the Tiger"

Then, students should complete this "moments sheet" for each story. During the first week of school, students will write an essay in class using their notes. Hard copies of the "moments sheet" may be picked up at Durfee High School upon request.

All honors first-years must also choose 1 of the following 3 novels to read — whichever looks most exciting:

• On the Come Up — Angie Thomas
• Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian — Sherman Alexie
• A Monster Calls — Patrick Ness

Then, students should complete this "moments sheet" for the novel they chose. During the first week of school, students will write an essay in class using their notes. Hard copies of the "moments sheet," and the books, may be picked up at Durfee High School upon request.
