Code.org Binary Number System

Computer Science Principles

This quarter focuses on the areas of "Math" and "Technology". Due to the name of this site, students often think we will be focusing on coding for the quarter, when in reality, this curriculum focuses on learning to count as a computer counts, using the Binary Number System.

Students must stretch their brains to learn a new number system completely different from the base 10 (sometimes referred to as decimal) system we have grown up knowing. Instead the Binary Number System is a base 2 system that using only 1s and 0s to count.

We use several digital tools on "code.org" to help us wrap our brains around this concept and also learn to compare the two systems so we can understand the basics of how a number system functions.

Computer Science is Changing Everything!

Watch this video to see all the possible careers paths STEM and Computer Science can lead to! Computer Science truly is changing the world we live in as well as the career paths we see graduates going into!

In our STEM classes, we try to connect each of our projects to a possible career path the students could take after high school. Where do they see themselves in 5 years... 10 years...? STEM really opens up the possibilities for these High Ability Learners to grow above and beyond and imagine careers for themselves that might not even exist yet!
