Our project aims to investigate the impact of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) classified under Social Development Goals (SDGs) content on firm performance and strategy. To achieve this, we have planned the following objectives:
Develop algorithms for text analysis using a validated SDGs dictionary to scan IPRs texts and classify them based on the presence and type of SDGs content.
Create algorithms to identify and exclude potential "false positives," which are words present in the SDGs dictionary but may have different meanings in the context of IPRs.
Map the portfolio of IPRs by company, year, and SDGs, and calculate the share of SDGs-related IPRs as well as the concentration or variety across different SDGs goals.
Examine the impact of SDGs on firm performance and financial evaluations.
Assess whether the impact of SDGs on firm performance and financial evaluations is driven more by value capture or value creation effects.
Investigate the relationships between IPRs and philanthropic donations, specifically examining whether they act as complements or substitutes.
By addressing these objectives, we aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of the role and effects of SDGs-related IPRs on firm performance, financial outcomes, and their interactions with philanthropic activities.
