The NTHU Liao's Historical Linguistics Research Group is a research group that Dr. Hsiu-chuan Liao has been convening for students at the Institute of Linguistics, National Tsing Hua University since Spring 2019. The purpose of organizing this research group is to help students at NTHU Linguistics progress faster in their degree pursuit. To achieve this goal, students are expected to take turns making presentations.
Some questions you might have about the Historical Linguistics Research Group
Who is eligible in joining the research group?
(1) graduate students at the Institute of Linguistics, National Tsing Hua University (typically students who show great interests in historical linguistics will be invited by Dr. Liao or other group members (after checking with Dr. Liao) or students can write to Dr. Liao to request for joining the group)
(2) advanced ungraduate students at National Tsing Hua University who have taken or are taking graduate-level courses from Dr. Hsiu-chuan Liao (typically students who show great interests in historical linguistics will be invited by Dr. Liao or other group members (after checking with Dr. Liao) or students can write to Dr. Liao to request for joining the group)
(3) incoming graduate students of the Institute of Linguistics, National Tsing Hua University (incoming students can write to Dr. Liao to request for joining the group)
We typically meet at 6:30PM on Wednesdays. Occasionally, the meeting can be scheduled at some other time. Typically, we meet once per week except when students have their midterm or final exams, or when most group members are travelling for conferences or fieldwork. However, when no student has any topic to present at a particular week, we will not meet.
Before COVID, we used to have in-person meetings. Since the pandemic started, we have been meeting online (via GoogleMeet) regularly except for abstract reviewing sessions.
Basically, every group meeting will begin with a presentation by a group member, and then Dr. Liao and other group members will give comments and suggestions for improving the presentation and/or research project.
No. Group members can choose to work with other professors at NTHU Linguistics. For example, Thanh Viet Cao works with Dr. I-Ta Hsieh for his dissertation research.
However, all supervisees of Dr. Hsiu-chuan Liao are expected to join the research group and make presentations regularly.
