Hsiu-chuan Liao is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Linguistics, National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan) where she has been teaching since 2006. Before joining the faculty at National Tsing Hua University, she taught linguistics at De La Salle University in Manila, the Philippines from 2004 to 2006. She received both her MA and PhD degrees from the Department of Linguistics, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, USA. Her primary research/teaching interests are Historical Linguistics (e.g. language contact, genetic relationships, reconstruction, and subgrouping) and Austronesian Linguistics (e.g. morphosyntactic typology of western Austronesian languages (especially, issues related to transitivity, ergativity, and case) and the diachronic development of morphosyntactic features in Philippine languages (especially, issues related to the development of personal pronouns and the development of so-called “focus” morphology and of other verbal affixes)).
