A Professional Training Year is an amazing opportunity for you to spend up to a year trying out research! If you're unsure what to do after your degree, this is an excellent opportunity for you. Between your second and final year, you can travel around the world, meet new people, learn about your field of interest, develop a spectrum of skills, and potentially earn money! Don't rely on just wet-lab settings to decide if you like research or not - try out research in the real-world.
During your PTY you can:
Find what field interests you and then expand your knowledge by working with world-renowned experts. This year can help you determine where you want your career to go.
Broaden your horizons: meet other researchers and make life-long friends. A PTY isn't just about research, it's about people - that includes work Christmas parties and leaving do's!
Placements are everywhere - the possibilities for where you can work are endless! From diabetes in Exeter or neuroscience in Paris,
you can go anywhere and do anything.
Now you've heard the benefits of a PTY, it's time to consider the type of placement you want:
Real research is so much more varied than what we see in wet-lab lessons! On a wet-lab placement, you can learn new techniques like gene modifying, CRISPR, designing virus', and working with disease-based genetically modified animal models. If wet-lab isn't your thing, computational research (e.g. using genome data) or clinical research (e.g. taking part in clinical trials), psychological field works, or systematic / meta-analysis health research are other opportunities where you can flourish. You will be permitted to do research in any suitable psychological, behavioural, biological, biomedical, clinical, or health assessment research field.
Experiences and the placement itself vary depending on the placement provider. Academic placements in universities tend to be more flexible with the goals of the project. However you are much less likely to be paid. Industrial placements in big corporations such as pharmaceutical and biotech establishments tend to have more rigid goals they want achieved but you may be paid!
