During the Medical Sciences academic programme there are a range of opportunities for you to develop your skills. See below an outline of these opportunities and who to contact to get involved.
In second and final year of the programme you can support your peers by getting involved in the Medical Sciences peer-assisted learning (PAL) programme. As a PAL you support earlier year students on topics ranging from exam preparation, statistics, academic writing & referencing, advice on careers and employability and undertaking the professional training year. It is great way to exchange knowledge and improve a variety of professional and personal skills. Throughout the Medical Sciences programme there is the opportunity to become the Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) Representative for your year group. The role of an SSLC Subject Rep is to help enable students and staff jointly to participate in the composition, management and review of College provision with a view to improving the quality of teaching and learning and facilitate greater communication between students and staff within a College. The Exeter Student Ambassador Scheme (ESAS) is managed by the Student Recruitment Office (SRO). Student ambassadors are booked by the SRO and other university departments to work on a wide range of events and activities throughout the year. As a student ambassador you would share your first-hand experiences of life as a University of Exeter student to a variety of different audiences, providing a positive, authentic and unscripted insight into the world of higher education. Typical activities include campus turs and visits, workshops in schools, offer holder/open days, higher education fairs and subject mentoring/shadowing. Students as Change Agents and Partners is the University’s philosophy and pathway for empowering students to actively improve the University experience for themselves and their peers. This website is the result of a students as change agents project. Every change suggested is explored and implemented through an individual project.Students’ involvement varies in each project; they can either take a leading role in running a project, as a Change Agent, or they can work with staff to deliver a project, as a Partner. Students registered through the scheme receive support and training to effect change, and are able to develop and demonstrate experience in leadership, teamwork and project management. Grand Challenges is a project week at the end of the academic year in which you will work in interdisciplinary groups with other like-minded students across the university to design innovative solutions to real world challenges. Top academics and invited speakers will share their views and help you apply your skills and knowledge to a real-life problem. You will further develop your transferable skills including team work, presentation skills and project planning.
The Exeter Award is an employability achievement award for current undergraduate and taught postgraduate students. Completing the Award will help you make the most of your professional experience. You'll receive training in valuable professional skills, develop vital workplace experience and learn how to optimise your CVs and application forms. The Exeter award involves 35 hours of work experience/ volunteering, a CV session, personal development session, 2 employability sessions, an online mock job application and interview.
The Exeter Leaders Award is an extracurricular award that recognizes leadership roles you've undertaken during your time at the University of Exeter. It also provides a framework to help you develop as a leader. It involves demonstrating leadership skills and attributes, attending a programme of leadership development workshops, completing a reflective application form and delivering a presentation to a panel showing how you've developed as a leader.
The ELE has a number of courses you can self enroll in to help with you personal and professional development. These include course on Sustainability and Social responsibility and can be completed as part of your Exeter and Exeter Leaders Award. These courses provide important information and guidance on your professional development and also is where you can self-enroll for the PALS and Students for Change schemes. Additional opportunities at the University to undergo personal development include involvement in societies and student groups. Being part of a society or on a committee are great opportunities to improve your communication and interpersonal skills as well as leadership skills.
All of these development opportunities support your personal and professional learning, tieing in with the APPLE's form which is part of the Academic and Professional learning aspect of the course.
