· the physical characteristics of place and its influence on the patterns of human settlement.

· the patterns of human settlement.

· the location and physical characteristics of places such as landforms, bodies of water, and other geographic features.

Canada

Student Understands:

· the concept of regions and the variety of ways to identify them (by race, religion, politics, culture, geography, political boundaries, climate, industry or wildlife).

· the history, geography, and cultural values of a neighboring country.

· the significance of geography and history in the development of the Canadian national identity.

Thirteen Colonies

Student Understands:

· family life in the colonies and how it is both similar to and different from life today.

· how political, religious and social institutions emerged in the thirteen colonies and affected the migration of the colonists.

· the people, events, problems, and ideas that were significant in the expansion of the United States.

Vikings

Student Understands:

· how major events relate to one another.

· the human, social and economic impacts of exploration.

· the early European exploration and colonization and the cultural, ecological and economic impacts experienced by previously unconnected people.

· that individuals and societies must make choices because available resources are limited.

· the motivations of the Vikings and the impact of exploration on other cultures.
