As Britton's parents, we both work full time and have since long before he was born. We are both school teachers in our small community. We have had multiple jobs simultaneously, and are doing all that we can to provide everything that we can for our sons. It's no secret that healthcare in America is not ideal right now.
We have had 3 different insurance providers since Britton has been born. We have met the high deductible almost immediately with every plan. Meeting those deductibles so quickly means that the costs have piled up on us just as fast.
Our most recent obstacle was meeting the deductible two weeks after starting a new insurance plan, only for it to start over at the first of the year. This means that while paying for the deductible, we are also now paying for his monthly medicines and therapies until we meet another deductible for a fourth time.
We are currently on a very long waitlist for secondary health insurance that will cover many things for Britton. We have been on this list since November of 2021 and have at least six more months of waiting. Until then, we have two options:
Do without and wait
Let the costs pile up and work toward Britton having the most normal life possible.
For us, every day of waiting is another day wasted in his recovery.
There are many things that we want to provide Britton that insurance will not cover. Equine therapy or Hippotherapy and seizure detection service training for our dog to name a few. The chart below was created to let everyone have an idea of what we are hoping to pay for one day.
