Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)
Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)
Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) is a program that allows 10th- 12th-grade students to earn both high school and college credit while still in high school, through enrollment in and successful completion of college nonsectarian courses at eligible participating postsecondary institutions. Most PSEO courses are offered on the campus of the postsecondary institution; some courses are offered online. Each participating college or university sets its own requirements for enrollment into the PSEO courses. 10th- 12th-grade students may take PSEO courses on a full- or part-time basis. Students must meet the PSEO residency and eligibility requirements and abide by participation limits specified in Minnesota Statutes, section 124D.09.
There is no charge to PSEO students for tuition, books or fees for items that are required to participate in a course. Enrolling in a PSEO course does not prohibit a student from participating in activities sponsored by the high school. Funds are available to help pay transportation expenses for qualifying students to participate in PSEO courses on college campuses.
*Please note: EVW HS follows the MN Department of Education’s (MDE) rule that a student must inform the EVW HS School Counselor in writing by May 30, of the year prior, of their intent to enroll PSEO. If the student does not follow this rule, they will be financially responsible to pay for their PSEO courses, fees, etc.
Should I participate in PSEO classes?
Before you decide to participate in the PSEO program, you and your parents should consider these points:
Future Plans - If you plan well, this program can assist you in making future education and career decisions and in exploring post secondary education.
High School Graduation - If you participate in this program, you still must meet your high school graduation requirements in order to earn a high school diploma. Review the requirements and your standing with your high school counselor. Make sure that the number and types of courses you take will meet local graduation requirements.
You should keep in mind that the grades you earn in post secondary courses will affect your grade point average, and may affect eligibility to graduate.
Scheduling - Participating in this program on a part time basis means that you must schedule classes at the high school and at a post secondary institution. Yearly schedules and vacation times usually are different between the two schools. It may be difficult to take the courses you want at both schools because of scheduling conflicts. Since semester start times are different, it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with their high school instructor(s) and college instructor(s) in advance regarding attendance and coursework completion.
College Level Work - You may find college level classes to be more accelerated and academically challenging than high school courses. You need to be able to work without supervision and have self-discipline both academically and socially. Be sure you are ready for these responsibilities.
Support Services - If you need help with your classes, you have access to student support services at the post secondary institution. It is your responsibility to contact support services and make arrangements for support. PSEO students will have reasonable access to the high school building, computers and/or other technology resources during regular school hours to participate in PSEO courses.
Withdrawal - If you decide you want to drop or withdraw from a college course(s), you can do that with no consequences within the first 14 days of the college semester. You MUST meet with your high school counselor to complete this with the post secondary institution. If you do not file the necessary forms in a timely manner, you will receive a failing grade which will become part of your permanent record.
