In 2020, East Valley High School launched the social and emotional learning curriculum, Character Strong. Character Strong is delivered to all students through our weekly advisory. The curriculum focuses on meaningful improvement in the following five areas:

Anxiety/Depression
Coping with Anxiety: A group for students who are experiencing general anxiety. This 6 week, closed group is designed to validate the experiences of group members while incorporating mindfulness practices, and healthy coping strategies. Facilitator: Jamie Turner, Thursday (ASCA Standards: A:C1.1, PS:B1.4, PS:C1.10)
Wellness Group: This 6 week, closed group is designed to support students' overall wellness. Group members may have underlying experiences involving depression and/or anxiety. Students will have an opportunity to explore their experiences and the experiences of others in a therapeutic group setting while focusing on their healing and overall wellness. Facilitator: Mariah Nepean, Friday (ASCA Standards: PS:A1.1, PS:A1.5, PS:A1.10)
COSAP
This group is for students who have a substance abusing parent(s), or are living with a substance abusing adult in a parental role. The purpose of these groups is to help students increase their understanding of chemical dependency; how it affects the family, how to cope with substance abusing parents and to provide support for the resulting stressors on their own lives. The groups will help students identify their personal strengths and coping mechanisms. Emphasis will be placed on developing healthy coping skills to reduce the risk that students will use substances, and in turn increase protective factors. Facilitator: Tina, Wednesday
Healthy Relationships
The relationship skills that adolescents learn during their high school years can help youth make positive choices in other aspects of their lives. Using The Relationship Spectrum, students will be able to identify healthy and unhealthy relationships around them. Healthy Relationships is a 6 week group that will cover topics that will engage students in conversation and provide tools that students can use to develop wholesome relationships. College Success First Generation
This group is designed for students who are the first in their family to attend college or have little, if any, family or outside supports to help them achieve their college dreams. In addition to developing a peer support group, this group will focus on understanding and navigating the college and financial aid application process. Once those are completed the group will focus on finding the right college fit and then how to successfully prepare for and transition into college. Group will meet 1-2 times per month for the entire year. Facilitator: Mr. Rovick, Wednesday (ASCA Standards: A: B1.4, A:B2.7, C:C1.6)
Newcomers Welcome Group
This group is for students who are new to the school district. The purpose is to help students form connections and adapt to being in a new school. Facilitator: Tina, Wednesday
Drug and Alcohol Education
This group is for students who are interested in learning about the impacts of substance use on the brain, body, relationships, emotional response, decision making, success in school and beyond, among many other areas. The purpose of these groups are to provide education on the short-term and long-term effect of substance use and development of healthy coping skills to reduce the risk that students will use substances, and in turn increase protective factors. Drug and Alcohol Education Intervention
This group is for students who recognize their current substance use as consequential and are motivated to decrease or end their use but may need help or support in how to do so. The purpose of these groups is to increase internal and external motivation to end substance use and develop healthy coping skills to support this motivation. Facilitator: Tina, Wednesday
