In 2019, the Washington legislature passed HB 1599 requiring districts to create automatic enrollment policies for advanced math, English, and optionally in science and social studies classes. Students who meet or exceed the state standard on the eighth grade or high school English language arts or mathematics statewide student assessment are automatically enrolled in the next most rigorous level of advanced courses or programs offered by the high school that align with the student's high school and beyond plan goals. Additionally, high school students who successfully complete an advanced course are automatically enrolled in the next most rigorous courses.

What is the purpose of this policy?: To provide equal opportunities for every student to have greater access to rigorous advanced courses resulting in the opportunity to earn dual credit for high school and college.
Can students opt out of this policy? Yes, students can either be automatically enrolled into the next most rigorous course available to them or the student can choose which course is appropriate for them based on their post-secondary goals in alignment with their High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP), or their feelings of preparedness for the advanced courses offered to them.
Can a parent/guardian opt their student out of this policy? Yes, a parent/guardian may opt their student out of the academic acceleration policy by 1) Completing the Skyward opt-out form in Family Access, or 2) Speaking to the school counselor.
Can I decide to opt my student back into the academic acceleration policy?: Yes, you would need to contact your student’s counselor to let them know.
Does my student have to enroll in all of the next most rigorous courses if they passed both mathematics and English state tests?: No, you can determine which courses you want your student to take. Contact your student’s counselor to inform them of which courses you want your student to take.
What happens if my student is enrolled in the next most rigorous course and they don’t want to take that course?: The parent can let the counselor know to adjust their student’s schedule accordingly.
