Visit My Mosque day

5th of February  2017

We had a national event which many towns and cities took part in, this event had a slightly religious dimension to it as it was geared to open the doors of a religious worship place to the wider Community, the visit my Mosque day is a initiative piloted by the Muslim Council of Britain to enhance community awareness and allow people to see at firsthand how a Mosque functions, at Craven arms which is a small rural town of south Shropshire we were delighted to have over 150 visitors who attended from all over the county, we had visitors who were with us from parts of Wales and as far as Ledbury, the day started at 12.00 pm and finished at 5.30 pm , it was a drop in session so people simply walked in at any time of the day, asked questions regarding the Mosque and enjoyed some refreshments, we were delighted to receive members from all different parts of the community, some Christian and people of other faiths also, the questions that were raised were mainly about worship, prayer rituals and the fundamental beliefs of a Muslim, some questions were touching on sensitive subjects like terrorism or misconceptions of Muslims in general, on this note we tried to bring a understanding of common values that we all hold dear, it is also a point to note that bad press is also a issue which fuels these kinds of misconceptions, we managed to build some very good links with other Churches and faith groups, a book of condolence was placed at the reception so visitors could give their response to how they felt, we received many cards and e-mails of appreciation. Such a success that we have already decided to hold the event again next year.
