School is out for the summer! I'm looking forward to meeting my new batch of Kindergarteners this August. In the meantime, read below to prepare for the upcoming school year.
The following are skills helpful for your child to already be successful with when entering Kindergarten:
Able to use the restroom independently
Can follow simple directions: First...Next...Then...
Can listen without interrupting
Can pay attention for a short period of time
Can express feelings with words
Can share with others
Can hold a pencil correctly
Can hold scissors and cut paper (practice straight lines, curves, and zigzags)
Can begin coloring inside the lines
Students learn the following in Kindergarten, but it is helpful if they get a jump with these skills this summer:
Can write their name with a capital at the beginning and the rest lowercase (help your child break the habit of writing their letters with all capital letters)
Can recite and sing the alphabet
Can recognize capital and lowercase letters (the more they know entering Kindergarten, the better)
Can recognize and count numbers to at least 10 (to 20 is a bonus!)
Know one to one correspondence to 10 (you can do this with counting blocks, toys, etc)
Can sort objects into groups by common attributes (for example: by color, by size, or by type)
Know text directionality, reading left to right and how to turn pages in a book (you can demonstrate this by moving your finger as you read, so they understand which way the words are read and having them help turn the pages)
Can answer simple questions about a story read to them: who, what, when, where
Additional Ways to Prepare
Bring students to the Greenhills campus and allow them to become familiar with the school
Play on the playground
Show them where the bathrooms and drinking fountans are
Walk them by the office where the principal, office staff, and nurse's offices are in
If your child has difficulty with separating from you, practice this over the summer and leave them with a trusted family member or friend for a short increment of time while you go to the store or run an errand, so your child gets used to temporary separation
Watch videos and read books about grown-ups coming back, Daniel Tiger is a favorite of mine for teaching such important life skills to students!
It is so important to read to your child. Through being read to, students learn vital skills such as text directionality, build their vocabulary and comprehension skills, they begin to pick up reading high frequency words on their own, and so much more.
Another way to keep your child reading this summer is to sign up for the free public library Summer Reading Challenge! See the attached flyer.
