Girls' Volleyball Victories

The girls’ volleyball team started their 2026 season strong with many wins, and currently hold an overall record of 14-2-0. On Aug. 27, the volleyball team lost to Bishop Montgomery 3-0. Despite the loss, Spartans improved on their technique and pushed on and won in the forthcoming games.

“As a captain I try to keep everyone motivated by encouraging and pushing my teammates in hard situations,” Captain Faith Brown said. “Often we get quiet or even shut down when we face these challenges so I try to stay vocal and remind everyone to stay together.”

On Sep. 1, South defeated Torrance in a home game. With a final score of 3-0, the volleyball team was uplifted by the win after their prior loss.

“The mindset going into the Torrance game was to bounce back from our old loss and learn from our mistakes,” Captain Zoey Laulusa said. “Our goal was to prove that we deserve to be there.”

Girls’ volleyball won their game against Peninsula on Sep. 3. After days of continuous training and enthusiasm from their last win, the Spartans beat Peninsula 3-0.

“Securing the win against Peninsula was important for our team’s confidence and allowed us to show off our skills,” Brown said. “We know what we are capable of and with the hard work we put into practices, we used this game to improve and run more complex plays on the court.”

With the successful season comes saddening information, volleyball Coach, Robert Kutsch, has announced that he is retiring from coaching after 31 years.

Robert Kutsch has been a key part to the Girls’ Volleyball program at South High and will be greatly missed by players, parents, and staff. With that being said, Girls' Volleyball still has a bright season ahead of them and has many upcoming games, so go support on Sep. 16 for their game against Redondo Union.
