The famous Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, started a trend in 2018, and mens and women’s tennis fashion has evolved ever since from the sport’s traditional plain white polo shirts and tennis skirts to bright, vibrant colors and comfortable dressing. This is especially noticeable at this year’s US Open, where players have expressed their own personalities on the court.
At her first round-match at the 2026 US Open, Aug. 31, Naomi Osaka wore an Allen Iverson inspired outfit. She stepped onto the court wearing a distressed gray French terry hooded gown over a flowy white skirt. The skirt displayed newspaper clippings, showcasing milestones from her tennis career. Getting ready to play, she removed the outer layer of her outfit, revealing a black-on-black on-court kit accessorized with a red and black headband and a black arm sleeve. This look paid tribute to Allen Iverson’s trademark look with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2000.
At Coco Gauff’s second-round match, she wore a custom New Balance tennis dress featuring a bright butter yellow and white design and an asymmetric pleated ruffle skirt. This outfit perfectly combined an eye-catching look with cutting-edge athletic performance. Gauff paired this with color coordinated ruffle socks, a matching headband, and her iconic New Balance Coco CG2 tennis shoes. Her overall design inspiration was from New York City’s historic Garment District and its massive impact on global fashion legacy.
Even though the media mainly focuses on womens’ fashion, mens’ fashion has become more creative and meaningful on the courts as well. On Sept. 3, at his third round, Frances Tiafoe’s Lululemon outfit included a vibrant contrast of bright pink and navy blue. He coordinated with bright pink socks, tennis shoes, and Lululemon sweat wrist bands. He paired the outfit with his signature “Big Foe” necklace. This bold outfit was inspired by his personal philosophy that on-court fashion should make noise and spark conversation.
At Taylor Fritz’s first round of the US Open, he wore a BOSS daytime set which included a white performance shirt with black detailing and black tennis shorts. Sponsored by BOSS, Fritz’s signature look on the court is mainly sleek and high fashion. His most famous look is an all white double breasted BOSS suit he wore to Wimbledon. The inspiration behind his look comes from Roger Federer in 2007 while also combining NFL and NBA fashion with tennis.
While the dress code at Wimbledon today are all white tennis outfits for a classy and conservative look, fashion at the US Open has gone from traditional to bold and expressive colors.
