Living in Southern California, it is extremely common to see someone in a pair of flip-flops. You might see someone wearing them while walking down the street in the Redondo Village or at your local Starbucks. Even in schools, students now wear flip-flops instead of closed-toed shoes. As a result many have started asking the same question: are flip-flops appropriate for school? Although this often sparks debates on campus, the overall consensus is that flip-flops are a positive addition to students’ wardrobes.
With the summer heat still being in the 80’s, students on campus are having a harder time keeping cool. It's well known that wearing open-toed shoes allows airflow and doesn't trap heat against the foot. This helps students feel less hot and sweaty throughout the day, which is especially helpful since most classrooms on campus lack air conditioning.

With back-to-school shopping, students buy many new clothes, shoes, and accessories. Of course, everyone wants to show off what they’ve bought, including their new pairs of flip-flops. Since flipflops come in many different colors, patterns, and designs, students can choose a pair that matches with their outfits and personalities. As well as being stylish these shoes are convenient for busy mornings since they are much easier to slip on. Additionally, flip flops are usually more affordable than other footwear, and therefore provide a better option for those who wish to save money.
Some claim that wearing flip-flops on campus should not be allowed because they don't provide enough support or protection for your foot. Although they can hinder your ability to participate safely in sports, that problem can be easily solved by bringing an extra pair of closed toed shoes when needed.
Overall, flip flops are a great choice for school especially during the hot summer weather. They keep you feeling cool, are easy to wear, and can show off your individuality. South High already has many big fans and the trend is quickly picking up as more students wear flip flops to school.
