To kick off the first week of school, ASB planned Welcome Week from Aug. 24-28. The week included different themed days and activities for students to participate in, in order to unite all grade levels.
“The main goal of Welcome Week was to build school spirit and make everyone feel welcome. It helped students get involved, make friends and feel more connected to the school,” Junior Class President Addie Bornstein said.
On Monday, Aug. 24, the day's theme was “Wear Your Favorite Summer Outfit”. During lunch ASB hosted a balloon toss in the mall.
“I participated in the summer theme because it was fun and stylish,” sophomore Emma Kavoian said.
Tuesday, Aug. 25, was “Anything but a Backpack” day. In the morning, students had the opportunity to enjoy donuts and coffee in the Mall before school. During the day students were able to show off their items, in their classes and around the school.
“The most memorable thing about welcome week was seeing people bring anything but a backpack because it was funny,” sophomore Emma Kavoian said.
South high students use their creativity to come up with backpack alternatives for "Anything But a Backpack Day."
Wednesday’s theme was a play on the famous Mean Girls quote: "Wednesday we wear pink.” However, students wore green to encourage Spartan pride. During lunch students participated in a boucny ball race.
“I wore green on Wednesday and I decided to dress up to support our school colors. The most memorable thing was being able to match with my friends” sophomore Jayleen Aguilar said.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, students dressed up as twins with their friends and engaged in a three-legged race at lunch.
Finally on Friday, Aug. 28th, the theme was “Feet out Friday” and students played spikeball and volleyball during lunch in the mall.

Welcome week gave students an opportunity to connect with their friends and feel more involved in school. Many students took part in the different themes which helped create a more positive environment.
