As this summer came to a close, a new season also returned to one of Netflix’s most Popular shows, Outer Banks. This adventure packed show follows teenagers from the outer banks of North Carolina in their pursuit for treasure. The fifth and final season of the show premiered on Aug. 21, and was soon the most trending subject across all social media platforms.

The fifth season follows the ending of season four where one of the beloved main characters, JJ Maybank, is tragically killed by his own father after finding the highly valuable blue crown. Stranded in Morocco after his death, “the pogues”, or JJ’s friends, John B., Kie, Sarah, Pope, Cleo, and Rafe, decide to seek revenge on JJ’s murderer, Groff.

The revenge plotline the writers chose was very fitting for the season, it brought out a different side of all the characters and made watching suspenseful and surprising.  Suspense was a common effect of this season, though at times it felt as if there was too much of it. Overall, the writers did a great job of keeping the audience hooked, whether it was the hunt for Groff, the treasure, or the dramatic relationships. 

Throughout the season as they travel across different countries, Kie struggles with the death of JJ more than the other pogues, since he was her boyfriend, which created her impulsive actions and moods as the episodes progressed. Simultaneously, John B. and Sarah deal with Sarah's unplanned pregnancy while on this journey of revenge.  The relationships this season were rocky and emotional due to the grief they all faced. However, one good relationship came out of this season, Rafe and his girlfriend, Sofia, reunited shortly after she was pressured by Groff into making investments with Rafe's money.  This was a big breakthrough for Rafe's character development, showing the audience that soft side of him towards the people he loves.

Ultimately, everyone gets their happy ending after recovering gold from the original treasure hunt of season one. The series ends with John B. and Sarah’s wedding, following the birth of their son having their son, JJ, who was named after their late friend. This ending was crucial to the show because it was a happy ending for every character. These characters had gone through a lot in their teenage years and it was fitting for them to recieve their happily ever after. Was the ending realistic? No, however it fulfilled the plot and left fans feeling fufilled, which is what every person wants when it comes to the end of a franchise. The new season of “Outer Banks” was worth waiting for and is evenmore worth binging.
