What are three activities you're looking forward to doing this summer?
DO NEXT: Get Ready!
Pull out your Chromebooks and head to OnShape OR TinkerCAD. Log in and create a new document named "Summer Vacation Lab"
SUMMER VACATION LAB
Your task for the remainder of the hour is to model yourself, doing something you plan to do this summer. This could be traveling to a specific location, doing a specific activity, or a general representation of something you hope to do. If you accomplish this task, you might add in extra details. This lab is not due until Friday, so take your time and be precise!
You may use any and all resources to help you, OTHER THAN using someone else's work. This means you can use online tutorials, YouTube videos, the OnShape Learning Center, working with a peer, etc. Whichever way works best for you and will help you be most successful. If you are working in TinkerCAD, you may NOT use existing objects in their libraries beyond the basic shapes.
STUDIO TIME
You have the remainder of class to work towards modeling the you've chosen. I expect that by the end of the class each person should have half of their model done. During this time, the expectation is that:
The room is quiet. If you are having a conversation, keep your volume low, and make sure that you still complete your work.
You may listen to music, you must use headphones. Please choose a playlist/album, and then let it run while you work. If your music becomes too much of a distraction, it will be taken away.
To that end, phones and other personal technology are to be off and away.
If you need help, ask a peer if they can assist.
If you finish early, use this time to complete any missing work that you have. Start with missing work for this class, and then you may move on to any missing work that you have for other classes.

DO NOW: Video
We will rewatch the video on how to generate a problem statement. While you are watching, keep a ear out for the three criteria that are most important to a problem statement.
REMINDER: YOUR SECOND PROJECT
As individuals, you will be going through the Product Design Process to identify and define a problem in one of your personal communities, or from your own daily life. After you have identified a problem, you will continue to work individually (with feedback from others) to design, prototype, research, and market your product.
On Thursday, you each generated a list of problems you experience in your personal lives, in the Etude/Sheboygan communities, and in the world as a whole. Today, you will be doing preliminary research to narrow that list down, and then you will begin creating a problem statement for the topic you are feeling most drawn to.
DO NEXT: Share Out
What did you hear during the video that stood out to you?
PROBLEM STATEMENTS
Head to the Google Classroom and pull up your Beane Protocol and your Preliminary Research document. You will need both as we do this. Using the guidelines for a problem statement, I will demonstrate a first draft of a problem statement. Then you will do the same. We will then keep revising problem statements until they meet all of the criteria and are as specific as necessary.
WHIP AROUND: Share your problem statement!
TICKET OUT: Tell me at the Door
With a thumb vote, how do you feel about your current problem statement? Thumbs up = good to go; Thumb sideways: I need feedback/revision; Thumbs down = I am confused and need help.
DO NOW: Review!
What are the 5 stages of the product design process? What stage are we currently in?
REMINDER: YOUR SECOND PROJECT

DO NEXT: BEANE PROTOCOL
Head to the Google Classroom and pull up your Beane Protocol from Thursday! If you have not yet, use the next 5 minutes to complete the box "Which problem are you most drawn to create a solution for?" You will complete this individually, (including a sentence or two about WHY you are most interested in that problem) and then we will come back together to share out those thoughts!
PRELIMINARY RESEARCH
On the Google Classroom, there is a new assignment called "Preliminary Research Questions". Use the template attached to that document to perform research to learn more about your topic. Your goal is to dig into the WHY's here. Why is it a problem? Who is most affected? What is the driving reason why the problem exists?
WRITING A PROBLEM STATEMENT
We will watch a video about how to write great problem statements, and then you will begin to create statements for the problem you are feeling most drawn to based on your research. You may find that further research is necessary to create a problem statement; if so, you should use this time to do that research, and then edit/update the problem statement you created.

With a thumb vote, how do you feel about your current problem statement? Thumbs up = good to go; Thumb sideways: I need feedback/revision; Thumbs down = I am confused and need help.
DO NOW: Review!
What are the 5 stages of the product design process?
DO NEXT: Re-watch!
We will quickly re-watch the video from last time, as a refresher, since we have been focusing on CAD Labs for a while.
YOUR SECOND PROJECT
As individuals, you will be going through the Product Design Process to identify and define a problem in one of your personal communities, or from your own daily life. After you have identified a problem, you will continue to work individually (with feedback from others) to design, prototype, research, and market your product.
Last time, we generated a list of problems we experience in our personal lives and in the Etude/Sheboygan communities. Today, I have provided that list from last time, and am asking you to edit it so that it makes sense for you as an individual. Additionally, I am asking you to complete the "Country/World" section, with issues you feel are important to that sector.
I will demonstrate what I am looking for from you.
WRITE, PAIR, SHARE: BEANE PROTOCOL
Head to the Google Classroom and go to the "Individual Product Design Project" topic. There is currently only one assignment, which is the new Beane Protocol document I demonstrated with. You will have the next 8-10 minutes to edit and add to the first two sections so that they are tailored to you, and also to complete the box "What are the problems/concerns/issues that you think are most important in our country or in our world?"
After having time to complete this individually, I will put you in pairs using my name wheel to share with each other and receive feedback on the problems you generated. Each partner will have 3 minutes to share out what they wrote down and why, followed by a minute of feedback from their partner on what problems they think would be most interesting/useful to address.
We will then come together to share out each person's Top 3 problems to address. We will discuss as a whole class what issues might be able to be solved with a product, and then you will work individually again to complete the "Which problem are you most drawn to create a solution for? Why?" box.
TICKET OUT: Fist to FIve
How sure are you feeling about the problem you want to address?

DO NOW: Goal Setting
Today you have guided work time. This is time meant to catch up on any missing work you may have. Your priorities for this time are as follows:
Missing work for this class (Spring Break lab, Animal lab, Shamrock lab, Object lab, Coffee Cup lab)
Missing work for a different class
Upcoming assignments/projects for another class
If you are all caught up, you may do a silent activity.
Reading, Drawing, Writing, coding in Scratch, etc.
DO NEXT: Share Goals
In a whip-around fashion, we will go around the room and share out your goals.
STUDIO TIME
If you need my assistance, please let me know and I will get to you as soon as I can.
You have the remainder of the class period to work towards accomplishing your goals. During this time, the expectation is that:
The room is silent, unless you are receiving help from a peer.
You may listen to music, you must use headphones. Please choose a playlist/album, and then let it run while you work. If your music becomes too much of a distraction, it will be taken away.
To that end, phones and other personal technology are to be off and away.
If you need help, ask a peer if they can assist.
TICKET OUT: Reflection
Rate your habits of work during today's studio time on a scale from 0-4. What makes you say that?
DO NOW: Go Around
What did you choose to model yesterday? How does it relate to something you did over Spring Break?
DO NEXT: Get Ready!
Pull out your Chromebooks and head to OnShape OR TinkerCAD. Log in and head to your "Spring Break Lab" document.
SPRING BREAK LAB
Your task for the remainder of the hour is to finish modeling an object that relates to an activity you did over spring break. For example, I celebrated a family member's birthday, so I might model a birthday cake with candles. If you traveled, you might model the method of travel you took (plane, bus, car, etc). If you did a lot of resting, you could model a couch or your bed.
STUDIO TIME
You have the remainder of class to work towards completing your model. I expect that by the end of the class each person should have this model fully done.
If you finish early, model another object! Try to think more abstractly about how you could represent an activity.
If you need help, ask a peer if they can assist.
TICKET OUT: Fist to Five
How complete is your Spring Break model?
Please welcome your guest teacher!

ANNOUNCEMENT: As has been talked about, all phones should be off and away in the classroom. If you cannot handle that responsibility, I will request that you put your phone in the bin on my desk. If it becomes an issue past that, you will have to turn it into the office.
DO NOW: Product Specifications
Yesterday, we shared product specifications, and not everyone got to share all of the features that they wanted to. As our Do Now, if you have a feature you want to share, please raise a hand and we'll add it to the document!
REMINDER: OUR FIRST PROJECT
As a class, we will be going through the Product Design Process to identify and define a problem in our school community or daily lives. As a whole class, we will then break into teams to design, prototype, research, and market our product. We will do this twice more this semester, once in small groups, and once as individuals. So make sure to participate to make sure you understand the process for when you'll have to do it on your own!
The topic we chose was Lack of Motivation!
PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
The product brief we came up with reads as follows:
"A box that reminds you of work to do. When you do the work, it stops reminding you, and tells you a reward. When you don't do the work, it devises a punishment. While you're working it plays music, and tells you when to take breaks and when to get back to work. If it senses you fall asleep, it plays a loud alarm. Locks you out of designated apps/activities."
TODAY'S TASKS
Today is a day for you to do any catch-up work for the project. Components I expect you to have:
Beane Protocol
Academic Research
Individualized Product Specifications
3D Model - take a screenshot and upload to google classroom!
STUDIO TIME
You have the remainder of class to work towards accomplishing any parts of the project that you are missing. I will be grading over the weekend, so it's in your best interest to have things turned in before your PoL! During this time, the expectation is that:
The room is silent, unless you are receiving help from a peer.
You may listen to music, you must use headphones. Please choose a playlist/album, and then let it run while you work. If your music becomes too much of a distraction, it will be taken away.

COLLECTIVE CREATION
On Tuesday, I asked if you would prefer to create our product as a whole class, small group, or individual. It was pretty split, so as a compromise, I have decided that we will come up with our product specifications as a group, then split into small groups/individuals to design what your version will look like. Those designs will be both 2D and 3D objects.
From there, we will regroup to create a marketing plan for the product, including the possibility of 3D printing physical versions, should a strategy call for it.
This is a great start, but we need to create more specifics! We previously created a document that listed the potential features we brainstormed as a group. Now, you will add the individualized features that your bot has. You must add at least 3 individual features for your bot. Include the name of feature, a description of what it does, and what purpose it serves (reward, punishment, advice, encouragement, etc.)
STUDIO TIME
You have the next 25 minutes to work towards adding the individual features for your bot.

SHARE OUT
We will go around the room and each person will share one feature that they added to their bot. If someone says a feature that you're particularly impressed by, add it to your own list!

You have had several days to create your personal designs for this product. Today, you will be meeting with different partners
DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
Your design must be within the dimensions we specified.
It must be able to perform all of the functions we described (e.g., there needs to be a spot for a speaker for the alarms)
You must have a 2D design, and a 3D design.
If you are working in a group, each person needs to be able to identify their contributions to the design (i.e., each person in the group must participate and have input in the design.)
Incorporate color into both of your designs!
BREAK INTO PARTNER GROUPS
I will use my spinny wheel site to split you up into pairs. You will have at least two partners for feedback today.

Stand up and move to your partners! Take your designs--whatever you have that can be shared--with you. Once there, whoever's name was listed first in the pairing on the site will be presenting first. Share your design. Make sure to state:
How it performs the functions specified in the product brief
What additional features you added to make your design unique
After the first partner has shared, the other partner should offer Warm and Cool feedback. Warm feedback is things you appreciate about the design, things that you feel work well, and any other positive comments you have. Cool feedback is suggestions that you have, questions, and any concerns you have about their design.
Once feedback has been shared, switch which person is presenting, and start the process over.
After both partners have shared, head back to your tables. Depending on the amount of class time left, we will either do another round of feedback, or move into studio time.
STUDIO TIME - REVISIONS & ADDITIONS
You have the rest of the class period to work on your designs.
There is a pad of graph paper on my desk for you to create your 2D designs. There are also markers, crayons, colored pencils, and regular pencils. If you have your own materials, you are more than welcome to use those!
Please use TinkerCAD to create your 3D design. Name the document "Group Name: Product Name", and be sure to share it with the other members of your group.
During this time, the expectation is that:
The room is quiet. If you are working with a group, keep conversations to a low volume.
You may listen to music, but you must use headphones. Please choose a playlist/album, and then let it run while you work. If your music becomes too much of a distraction, it will be taken away.
To that end, phones and other personal technology are to be off and away.
TICKET OUT: Tell Me at the Door
What was a valuable piece of feedback you received today?
DO NOW: Get Ready!
Pull up your design and get ready to share what you want to accomplish today!
The product brief we came up with on Tuesday reads as follows:
"A box that reminds you of work to do. When you do the work, it stops reminding you, and tells you a reward. When you don't do the work, it devises a punishment. While you're working it plays music, and tells you when to take breaks and when to get back to work. If it senses you fall asleep, it plays a loud alarm. Locks you out of designated apps/activities."
Last week, we created a list of product specifications, which I have posted on the Google Classroom. Today, you will be continuing to create designs for your version of this product.
DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
Your design must be within the dimensions we specified.
It must be able to perform all of the functions we described (e.g., there needs to be a spot for a speaker for the alarms)
Incorporate color!
You must have a 2D design, and a 3D design.
If you are working in a group, each person needs to be able to identify their contributions to the design (i.e., each person in the group must participate and have input in the design.)
Incorporate color into both of your designs!
BREAK INTO GROUPS
If you are working with others, now is the time to move so you are near them.

While you're working it plays music, and tells you when to take breaks and when to get back to work. If it senses you fall asleep, it plays a loud alarm. Locks you out of designated apps/activities."
This is a great start, but we need to create more specifics! Things such as possible punishments and rewards, how reminders are sent, frequency/length of breaks, physical size requirements and other features.
STUDIO TIME: Think, Pair, Share
Think: You will have 2 minutes to brainstorm features and specifications that you feel would be helpful and productive.
Pair: Working with the people at your table/near you, try to combine ideas, expand upon ideas, or further refine them! Make sure to write things down so that you have them when we come together as a whole group!
Share: What features and specifications did you come up with? I will take notes of each, as well as further descriptions of those specifications, and then post our list to Google classroom so you have it for reference.
TICKET OUT: Tell Me at the Door
What feature/specification is the one you feel would have the most impact on you?
DO NOW: Goal Setting
Today you have guided work time. This is time meant to catch up on any missing work you may have. Your priorities for this time are as follows:
Missing work for this class (Keychain lab, Scene lab, Object Lab, Beane Protocol, etc.)
Missing work for a different class
Upcoming assignments/projects for another class (or continue brainstorming!)
If you are all caught up, you may do a silent activity.
Reading, Drawing, Writing, coding in Scratch, etc.
DO NEXT: Share Goals
In a whip-around fashion, we will go around the room and share out your goals.
STUDIO TIME
I will be going around to check in with folks who have missing work.
Did you accomplish your goal from the beginning of the class period? Why or why not?

COLLECTIVE IDEATION
Together, we will take the ideas brainstormed yesterday and last Thursday, and combine them into a Class Mind Map. From there, we will create separate mind maps to expand upon the most prevalent/realistic ideas from the whole group.
RESEARCH STUDIO TIME
After we brainstorm some of these ideas, we will break up into groups to do preliminary research, to see if those ideas are viable. We will report back to the whole group afterward.
I will assign groups to different research topics. Please move to be with the people who have the same topic as you!

INDIVIDUAL IDEATION
You will have the next 15 minutes to do your own brainstorming of solutions to lack of motivation. On Thursday, I asked you if you were more comfortable drafting solutions on paper or digitally, and the result was about a 50/50 split. So,
If you prefer working on a chromebook, please open up a Jamboard or Google Doc to organize your thoughts.
If you prefer to work on paper, I have paper, pencils, and markers for you. You may also use your own materials if you so choose.
MIX AND MINGLE
Using what you have brainstormed, we will mix and mingle with peers to share out what you're thinking of and receive feedback on those ideas!
Afterwards, we will come together as a whole group.
SHARE OUT
What was one cool thing you heard from someone else?
What is one idea you had, and a piece of feedback you received on it?
What is one new idea you had as a result of your discussion?

REMINDER: As talked about at Town Hall Wednesday, all phones should be off and away in the classroom. If you cannot handle that responsibility, I will request that you put your phone in the bin on my desk. If it becomes an issue past that, you will have to turn it into the office.
DO NOW: Get Ready!
Pull out your chromebooks and head to TinkerCAD! We'll be taking a break from our project today, and resuming on Monday.
OBJECT MODEL ACTIVITY
Today, you will be choosing an object from the room to model in CAD. I have an assortment of objects on the back table that you can choose from, ranging from beginner to advanced difficulty. You may also choose an object from your own belongings.
You will need to avoid objects that are a single shape. Challenge yourself! I am not expecting these to be perfect; rather, I want you to explore the tools in TinkerCAD and find innovative ways to create the object you have chosen. If you want to challenge yourself further, grab a ruler and try to make the object to scale!
STUDIO TIME
You have the remainder of the class period to work towards modeling your object. During this time, the expectation is that:
The room is quiet, unless you are receiving help from a peer.
You may listen to music, you must use headphones and your chromebook. Please choose a playlist/album, and then let it run while you work. If your music becomes too much of a distraction, it will be taken away.

DO NOW: The Reveal
As our Do Now, I will reveal the problem that your votes selected for us to work on!
REMINDER: OUR FIRST PROJECT
As a class, we will be going through the Product Design Process to identify and define a problem in our school community or daily lives. So make sure to participate to make sure you understand the process for when you'll have to do it on your own!
IDEATION CHALK TALK
On Monday and Tuesday, you were assigned to do research about the topics and pre-existing solutions. Today, we will start the brainstorming phase. On three of the tables, there are large white sheets of paper. We will do a silent chalk talk on these pieces of paper. What you write can be consequences of the problem, causes of the problem, or suggestions of solutions. All of this is valid and necessary for us as we continue with our ideation/brainstorming phase.
After 10 minutes at your own table, we will rotate, and you will have 5 minutes at each of the other tables to respond/react/add to the ideas on the other sheet of paper.
SHARE OUT
When you come back to your table groups, go over what was originally written on your sheet, and what has been added to it. Try to summarize the thoughts in a sentence or two, OR identify what you feel to be the top 2 most important thoughts on the page.

PRELIMINARY RESEARCH
Yesterday, you were each assigned a topic to research, to provide extra information and insight into the problem. On the Google Classroom, there is a document for you to use to track your research. In the left column, write down the question you are seeking to find the answer to. Put the answer you find in the middle column, and the source you found it at in the right column. This way, if two people have conflicting information, we know where it was found and can figure out what the correct response is.
What I want you to focus on today, is finding pre-existing solutions to the problem that you have been assigned. We don't need to re-invent the wheel, and often, we can find a solution that can be adapted for our needs/situation or that gives us an example of what WON'T work.
You will have 30 minutes to conduct your research. Look at websites, watch videos, read news articles, etc. Keep track of the information you found in the document from today.
SHARE OUT
Decide upon one important piece of information that you feel the rest of the class NEEDS to know. We will then go around the room to share that information with each other!
TICKET OUT: Google Form
Take the poll on the Google Classroom to rank your preferences for the problem we'll tackle! We will start ideation on Thursday.
DO NOW: Review!
On Friday, we created three different problem statements for issues we identified in the Etude and Sheboygan communities. As our Do-Now, we will review those problem statements!
DO NEXT: Revise
Are there any problem statements that you feel we should revise, after having some time away from them?

BEANE PROTOCOL
Head to the Google Classroom and pull up your Beane Protocol! We will use the next 5-8 minutes to complete the box "Which problem are you most drawn to create a solution for?" You will complete this individually, (including a sentence or two about WHY you are most interested in that problem) and then we will come back together to go over it.
Each person will share out which problem and why, and I will keep track of those problems to generate a list of the Top 3 problems we are interested in as a whole. If your top pick isn't chosen this time, don't worry! You will have more opportunities to address the problem in the future.
WRITING A PROBLEM STATEMENT
We will watch a video about how to write great problem statements, and then begin to create statements for the Top 3 problems we have identified. We may find that further research is necessary to create a problem statement, in which case we will take 5-10 minutes to do that research, and then come back together to share our findings and update the problem statement.

IDENTIFY A PROBLEM
Using the beane protocol, we will generate problems that exist within our own lives and our school community. You will work individually to brainstorm on your own, and then we will come together to see what problems we have in common!s
TICKET OUT: Tell me at the Door
What is one problem you identified?
DO NOW: Whip Around
What is one part of your scene you have to finish today?
DO NEXT: Get Ready!
Pull out your chromebooks and head to TinkerCAD. Today is your second (and last) day to complete the scene.
SCENE LAB OVERVIEW
You will be creating a scene in CAD today! This scene could be from a book or movie, or a place in your real life. There are 3 criteria for this lab:
The scene must contain at least 5 objects
You may only use ONE pre-created object in TinkerCAD as part of those 5 objects. If you add additional objects after that, they can be pre-created.
This is due by the end of the day Monday!
STUDIO TIME
You have the remainder of the class period to work towards completing your scene. If you would like to plan your scene on graph paper before you start modeling, let me know and I will get you some.
The room is silent, unless you are receiving help from a peer.
You may listen to music, you must use headphones. Please choose a playlist/album, and then let it run while you work. If your music becomes too much of a distraction, it will be taken away.
To that end, phones and other personal technology are to be off and away.

You may only use ONE pre-created object in TinkerCAD as part of those 5 objects. If you add additional objects after that, they can be pre-created.
This is due by the end of the day Monday!
STUDIO TIME
You have the remainder of the class period to work towards completeing your scene.
If you need help, ask a peer for feedback, and then raise a hand and I'll come to you.
TICKET OUT: Fist to Five
How close are you to completing your scene? Fist = Not at all, I'm going to need more than just Monday; Five = I'm already done and I'm going to add even more on Monday.
DO NOW: Whip Around
What is a 3D printed object you've seen, that stuck with you? It could be because you found it useful, strange, cool, etc.
DO NEXT: Get Ready!
Pull out your chromebooks and head to the Google Classroom. Underneath
TINKERCAD BASICS
Together, we will go over the basic features of TinkerCAD. This will include placing and moving objects, grouping objects, resizing objects and creating holes, and using the text function.
KEYCHAIN LAB
Using a combination of pre-made objects and our own creations, we will each create a keychain with our names on it. Please follow along, and when you are done, upload a screenshot of your design to the assignment on Google Classroom.

DO NOW: Think, Pair
How many CAD systems do you know of? What are their names? If you've used them before, what do you wish you had known before doing so?
DO NEXT: Share
We will stand up and share out the softwares you came up with!
TINKERCAD
The first software we'll be using is TinkerCAD. It's a pretty basic program that's great for beginners, but that also means it can't do the complex work of some other softwares.
Today, we will dip our toes into TinkerCAD through a couple of Kahoots. These Kahoots have questions about the history of TinkerCAD, as well as about TinkerCAD and the process for using it. The goal of this Kahoot is NOT to get every answer correct, but to give it your best guess, and then learn from the information presented. I hope to go over much of what's in this Kahoot over the course of the next week, so this gives me a baseline of where your knowledge is at.

DO NOW: Business Cards
I will hand out index cards for everyone. On the blank side, please write your name and pronouns in the center. On the other side, write one reason why you signed up for 3D design, and one piece of information about yourself.
DO NEXT: Share out
We will stand up and share out the information on your notecard! Once you have shared, you may sit back down. During this time, voices should be off, and attention should be on the person who is sharing their notecard.
GOOGLE CLASSROOM CHECK
Just to make sure, please pull out your chromebooks and head to Google Classroom. Make sure that you have the "3D Design" classroom. If you do not, let me know so I can add you to it.
ONSHAPE SETUP
During this class, we will be using an online cloud-based CAD software called Onshape. Signing up for a student account takes some effort, so I want to walk through that process with you.
EXPLORE ONSHAPE
Using a See, Think, Wonder, we will explore the Onshape interface.
What do you see?
What do you think it is used for?
What questions do you have?
