John Papit, 86, Philadelphia, PA, was a football star at Northeast High School who also set records as a running back at the University of Virginia. John spent four years in the NFL before embarking on a career in banking. Despite his football legacy "Johnny" as he was known by friends rarely spoke about his gridiron glory. Mr. Papit was drafted in the seventh round by the Washington Redskins in 1950. He was a running back with the Redskins for three years before he was traded to the Green Bay Packers.
He retired from football in 1954 and began a multi-decade career as a bank executive. John Papit essentially "built his career in banking from scratch." He served as executive vice president at the Bank of Virginia and was the president of several banks, including Community Banks in Florida. John and his wife Barbara lived for many years in Seminole, Fla and returned later in life to Forest, VA, outside of Lynchburg, in 2005.
John was a member of the Rotary Club of Seminole and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a senior officer at Community Bank of Seminole (formerly Bank of Seminole). He was active in the Greater Seminole Area Chamber of Commerce as a director. He was active in Seminole United Methodist Church.
