Accelerated Reader is a program designed to help motivate children to read! Students have set reading goals based on individual reading levels. Students read a book, then take a comprehension test on the computer. Once they reach certain levels, they are rewarded. Most importantly, they READ, READ, READ! This program is designed to motivate, monitor, and manage reading practice.

Students choose from books written at their own reading level. Each book in this program is labeled with an individual reading level, or the ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). This ZPD is the range of books which students can read without reaching a level of frustration. Students are encouraged to stay within their reading range when selecting books. Research shows that the greatest amount of reading growth is achieved when a child stays within his/her ZPD level during independent reading. It also shows that reading at least 15 minutes a night helps children stay at their grade level. Your child’s ZPD level will be sent home second trimester!

Parents & students can log onto Renaissance Home Connect (https://hosted215.renlearn.com/267568/HomeConnect/) to see progress towards reading goals, conduct book searches using AR Bookfinder, review results on AR quizzes, number of books read, and much more. You will need a user name and password. (It is different than the one students use to log-in at school.)

Many books you have at home may be AR books already! You may also open a parent account at our school library to check out AR books for your child. Our library is opened everyday before and after school!
