Meet the Officers

Staff Advisor

Joseph Goodwill

Joe Goodwill is currently an Assistant Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Rhode Island, a position he started in the fall of 2017. In this appointment he executes research in physical-chemical processes, water quality, and water-poverty issues. He also teaches classes focused on water treatment and reuse, and environmental analytical techniques. His Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering are from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He also holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Lafayette College. Prior to entering academia, Joe was a Project Engineer for Black & Veatch working on global projects out of their Philadelphia office. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional. Joe also works with multiple international water NGOs, supporting projects in Malawi, India, Ghana, and Bolivia.


Graduate Advisor

Kiran Thakur

Kiran is a graduate student with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering currently pursuing his M.S. in Quantum Information Science and lives in Lincoln, RI. He was also the president of ESW during the 2021-2022 school year! His motivation for joining Engineers for a Sustainable World stems from a passion and drive for sustainability and keeping the world green. He is very interested in renewable and sustainable energy, and it is his hope of his that it's something society can eventually be fully reliant on. In his free time, Kiran enjoys gardening, baking, and exercising. Fun facts: He does research in quantum mechanics and likes to play guitar in his free time!

Katie Aaronson

Katie Aaronson is a sophomore from Pennsylvania majoring in Ocean Engineering and Spanish through the International Engineering Program (IEP). During her freshman year, Katie joined ESW because of her interest in sustainability and its relation to climate change. Through ESW, she has enjoyed learning more about sustainability and its applications, as well as helping others get involved in environmental protection. Outside the club, she enjoys traveling, listening to music, and going to the gym. She is currently a Resident Academic Mentor within the College of Engineering.

Matt Mellor

Matt, a junior from Cranston, RI, is majoring in Chemical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. He enjoys playing volleyball, basketball, and skiing. He joined ESW to learn more about sustainability and the engineering process, as he believes that sustainability is a very important aspect of engineering, and it will have a huge impact on our future. He is taking part in research regarding advanced materials (complex fluids and soft matter) and likes to spend time in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Matthew O'Donnell

Matt is majoring in Chemical Engineering and German at the University of Rhode Island. He enjoys hiking, playing games, and biking. He joined ESW to gain hands on experience in on research for sustainability.

Amanda Fang

Amanda is a junior double majoring in Accounting and Chinese and comes from Cranston, RI! She enjoys reading, listening to music, and watching TV shows, movies, and anime. Her motivation for joining ESW is to learn more about sustainability, get involved with the community, and try something new.

Kaitlyn Tunney

Kaitlyn is a junior from shoreline Connecticut majoring in Biomedical Engineering. She joined ESW originally with an interest to work on the Greenhouse and eventually expanded her role into becoming an officer! Before she was elected, she hosted ESW's first Solidworks tutorial class, and hopes to apply sustainable principles to her design work as an engineer. Outside of academics, Kaitlyn enjoys painting, reading, yoga, music, and all things creative!
