The San Jose Downtown Foundation is focused on enhancing the cultural and aesthetic environment.
The Foundation’s signature program is Downtown Doors, which not only beautifies public spaces by putting artwork on otherwise flat service doors and utility boxes, but gives high school students the golden opportunity to post messages about their views of the world through mass media and art. Each year, the works of more than 20 students are posted throughout the downtown. SJDF has more than 100 sites for the art, which always delight and surprise passersby.
The Foundation also supports arts projects such as murals and business window art that enrich downtown’s urban landscape. During the first Covid pandemic, the Foundation supported businesses that had been vandalized and sponsored the Hella Gardens project in which artists decorated downtown door and window fronts with floral paintings.
Over the past 22 years Piedmont Hills High School students have been selected 25 times, making it one of the top 5 winning high school programs in San Jose, CA. Below are the two winners selected for the 2025 Downtown Doors.
