Social media offers BIG opportunities to engage students and families in learning. What better way to share the great things happening in your center than to show it! Harness the social media experience of three metro districts: Millard, Westside, and Ralston through their communications leaders. Hear what has worked for their communities and how you can build or grow your digital presence. Also, learn from (and avoid) potential pitfalls in developing a unique voice, having fun, and engaging learners in a new way.

The BBC purchased micro:bits for every grade 7 student in Britain. This affordable microcontroller can be programmed in many languages including blockly, Java, and micropython. Micro:bits have opened the door for teachers to introduce programming to students at a younger age and move experienced programmers into the world of physical computing. In this hands on workshop, participants will get an overview of the micro:bit and will walk away with tips, tricks, and ideas on how to implement this instructional tool into their lessons.

Come join me and explore the fabulous free resources provided at Code.org and get your elementary students coding. This session will focus on using the free code.org Computer Science Fundamentals courses that may be implemented as one unit or over the course of a semester. Students create computer programs that will help them learn to collaborate with others, develop problem-solving skills, and persist through difficult tasks. They will study programming concepts, computational thinking, digital citizenship, and develop interactive games or stories they can share. Bring your device and let’s have some fun!

This session will provide teachers and librarians with a detailed lesson plan about fake news that will teach students to critically evaluate sources. We will share a Google Slides Presentation that includes links to all of the resources from our lesson. We will demonstrate certain parts of the lesson and will have participants engage in the activities as if they are the students. We have taught this lesson to 10th grade English students for two years, but the lesson can be modified to teach any grade level in almost any subject area.
