Interview de Jean-Baptiste Jossa - Digital Strategy Analyst at M6 and alumnus of the Media and Digital Chair (class of 2018-2019).
Can you tell us about your career path?
I did my first internships in the audiovisual industry, first as a production assistant in a video start-up for companies (advertising, internal communications, etc.), then in the strategy department at TF1. Passionate about music, I did my end-of-studies work internship at Vialma, a streaming platform dedicated to music and jazz, following on from my research paper on Spotify and its role in the music industry compared to the majors.
I now work in the strategy department of the M6 group as a digital strategy analyst.
What do you like about your current job? What are your main tasks?
I really like the team's cross-functional, analytical approach, which gives us a global understanding of the company and its market. The assignments involve analysing and understanding the issues at stake in complex situations, exchanging views with the group's stakeholders who are experts in their field, and finally supporting the managers in their decision-making.
As far as digital is concerned, I find the subjects particularly interesting at a time when usage is going massively digital and it's clear that both TV and radio will have to evolve.
Finally, I arrived in the week of the announcement of the proposed merger between M6 and TF1, which obviously adds a little more spice to the adventure. In short, there's no shortage of interesting topics!
How do you feel about the M6-TF1 merger?
This project is a real 18-month marathon between the announcement of the project, the preparation of the file by the parties and the deliberation by the authorities (competition and ARCOM) expected next October. To talk about my field, this merger would enable us to be better equipped to position ourselves in the streaming market against the American giants, and thus ensure the best possible continuity of our business between linear and non-linear. It's exciting to be able to follow a project like this from the inside, and there will be some great strategic projects to carry out whatever the outcome.
I saw that you had shared an audio drama you produced with a former ESSEC classmate. How important is it for you to work on this kind of personal project and how have you managed to find a balance with your work at M6?
I love this question! It goes to the heart of what I want to pass on to students preparing to enter the professional world. I'm convinced of the importance of pursuing one's passions with care, both for personal balance and for sharing them with others.
Personally, it's music that drives me and today I continue to give concerts and create projects, such as the audio drama Le secret du Condor, which we published this year with Sébastien Mion (Media Chair 2017) and which brings together music and theatre in a podcast.
It's important for me to reconcile this passion with my work, and even to combine the two, which is what we were able to do with a great concert for the fête de la musique between colleagues in the big RTL studio!
What drew you to the chair and what did you get out of it?
I knew from the start of my studies that I wanted to go into the media, so I took the chair. What I really appreciate about it is the opportunity to learn by meeting professionals, which makes the course an ideal bridge between the world of study and the world of work.
What's your best memory of the Chair?
The Chair enabled me to attend the Cannes Film Festival, which was a very powerful experience. I was able to learn more about the world of cinema, which I knew less about, and above all to immerse myself in the very essence of our business: content!
What advice would you give to students in the Chair or those interested?
We were trained in the chair to ask the right questions and not to be afraid to talk to the people we met, and I think that's essential. I encourage you to meet and talk. We're lucky to work in a sector where our jobs are our passions. I can assure you that most of the time, your contacts will be happy to answer your questions!
