El poder de la literatura: Transforming Your Classroom Library

As dual language educators, the process of reviewing the literature in our classroom libraries is vital to upholding the goals of biliteracy and sociocultural competence. In this session, we will explore libros acompañantes, texts that “acompañan” the identities of multilingual learners in a way that humanizes their experiences (Heiman et al., forthcoming). Participants will leave with an array of resources and ideas for transforming la literatura en el salón dual.

Transnational language practices: Bilingual and biliterate dual language teachers

One of the main findings from this research is that dual language teachers’ identities are not limited to being Mexican or Mexican Americans; rather, their identities are multiple and constantly negotiated as indicated by the ways in which they have cultivated their linguistic repertoires in two languages, with various levels of proficiency and for diverse purposes. Based on the findings, within the context of the U.S.-Mexico border, bilingualism and biliteracy are the result of countless meaningful experiences with two languages. The frontera is fertile ground for bilingualism and biliteracy development since there are ample opportunities to engage in two languages throughout the community.
