December 1b

Festive Baking
In our last week before the holidays, the whole class
were keen to make and bake some Christmas goodies.
Working in teams, they made
cupcakes and gingerbread biscuits, then iced and decorated them to share with families at home.

1. Making Cupcakes

2. Making Gingerbread

"It smells so good."

Squeezing the syrup

Adding the ginger.

"I know how to knead the dough."

"I need the spatula to lift it."

3. Icing the cakes and biscuits

On Friday December 16th, the P1 children were excited to perform for their families and carers in their Winter Show. After some great musical introduction from the guitar group and strings, P1 sang a range of seasonal songs, including We Wish You A Merry Christmas, accompanied by sign language, and The Seven Days of Busby.
Thank you to all who came along.

"On the first day of P1 my teachers gave to me... my own little Busby bumble bee..."

"...had a very shiny nose..."

Winter Open Classrooms:
On
December 12th, it was lovely to welcome Parents and Carers into the P1b classroom to join in with some of our learning.

At the Writing Table, some great writing skills were on show as children wrote letters to Santa and put them into the Christmas post box.

Numeracy: We have been looking at numbered wooden doors up to 30, placing them in order, and designing our own doors for the number we live at.

"Mine is number 77."

"I've made ten different ones."

Science: we used the microscopes to look closely at some interesting objects, including ice and leaves.

We are also learning about telling the time and how to read clocks.

"11 o'clock. That's when morning break finishes."

We experimented with alarm clocks and a cuckoo clock.

"Look, five kinds of clocks all in a row."

Exploring Numbers & Quantity through Play

"Look, I made a number 11."

"I've got the number 24 bag."

Literacy and Phonics:

The children had fun putting together words in a version of Bananagrams. They each tried to make a word on a banana, and recorded on a score chart to see who got the most. We had lots of great CVC and longer words, including Dad, Car, Far, Elf, Ear, Boom, Soon and Shark. Our winner scored over ten words.

Expressive Arts:
P1b worked hard to create individual crowns to wear at their Winter Show on Friday 16th. They tried using lots of different collage and drawing materials, each choosing how they wanted to make up their personal design.

Angel role play and drama...

Literacy: We've been learning sounds like "Oi", "Ou", "Qu" and "Sh" and how to write, say and blend them in words.
We tried some
Phonics Fishing to help with our word blending, including a few Christmas words, all chosen by the children.

"I'm going to do "Elf".... and now "Bell"."

"I want to do "Shark"."

Great scissor skills were on show when some of the children chose to make Snowflake Decorations. They traced and cut circles, folded them, then cut holes to create a doily effect, then glued them on to old silver DVDs, working carefully and independently.

Numeracy: We've been learning to identify, read and write numbers to 30.
