September 2022

Ready, set, go!

It has been an exciting first few weeks in Primary 2 Alpha, getting to know each other and settling into the new routines of life in Primary 2.

In Primary 2 we work hard and we play hard too! We have been working very hard on our literacy and numeracy targets: phonics, prediction, number bonds, months of the year and many more! We have so enjoyed PE outdoors, practising our ball skills and improving our general fitness. We have also been learning about friendship and kindness with Mr. Johnston on Mondays too.

We especially love our afternoons together, learning through play and integrating art, science, literacy, numeracy and many more learning opportunities through our wider learning topics. The blocks, Lego and art are firm favourites with the class. It is wonderful to see the children's creativity and problem solving through their play. What clever little cookies we all are!

THe Lighthouse keeper's Lunch

We have kicked off this year with an exciting topic based around the story series The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch by Ronda Armitage. The children have absolutely loved learning all about lighthouses - building their own from a variety of materials, making pulley systems for Mr Grinling's lunch and even having a go at setting up some electric circuits to power Mr. Grinling's light too! We realised that having two batteries made our light much brighter and we were sure to use rechargeable batteries to do our bit for the planet too.

"We need to use electrics to power the light!" ~ Shaun

"The electricity goes through the wires round to the light to make it shine." ~ Tyler

We really enjoy art in this class and have made some fabulous lighthouse collages and rock pool watercolour paintings. They have really brightened up our classroom! The children loved making their own salt dough star fish to take home too.

Did you know, that the moon affects our tides? We were fascinated to learn this after reading one of our Lighthouse Keeper stories and even had a little go at acting out the sun, Earth and moon's orbits in the drama studio!

Roald Dahl Day

The 13th of September was Roald Dahl day and in Primary 2 Alpha we celebrated in style with a host of Roald Dahl themed activities throughout the day.

During literacy, we shared some of Roald Dahl's revolting rhymes and loved our Chapter all about the infamous Miss Trunchbull! I think the giggles could be heard all the way to Mr McDonald's office. We had a go at some character descriptions using colourful chalk pens on our desks and practising our fine motor skills by using the tweezers to remove all of the yucky things from Mr Twit's disgusting beard!

In Maths we had a go at creating our own Esio Trot tortoises using a variety of different shapes and finding the missing numbers in the Witches' magic potions too.

In the afternoon we were very excited to return to class to find that it had been transformed into Willy Wonka's chocolate factory! We had a ball playing with the "Golden ticket" chocolate, "Strawberry Fizz" and "Blueberry Shnozzle" play dohs and creating our own chocolate bars and sweets at the art station. Some of the children built their own chocolate factories from Lego and blocks too. What a wonderful day!

"This is the best day of Primary Two ever! Can we have Roald Dahl day every day?" ~ Harleen
