October news

What a busy month we have had in Primary 2 Alpha! Thank you so much to the parents and carers who were able to pop by for our Learning Together afternoon. It was so wonderful to see everyone and for the children to be able to share their classroom with you all.

The children have been working very hard on their literacy and numeracy targets this month, practising new phonics blends, spelling rules and revising our common/tricky words to be able to transfer these with confidence into our writing. We have been writing some incredible adventure stories this month which were so wonderful that we even tiptoed into other classrooms to show off our hard work... In maths we have been exploring the months of the year, giving directions, shape, finding patterns and mental maths strategies too.

In our Health and Wellbeing lessons with Mr Jonston we have been improving our general fitness with throwing, catching and racket skills. We have also been learning all about fire safety. Perfect timing with Bonfire night just around the corner!

We were delighted to learn about Diwali this month and had a go making our own Rangoli patterns and Rangoli peacocks using chalks in class. We were so delighted to have a visit from Jia's mum to share the story of Diwali with the children. Thank you!

planet earth

The children have been so enthusiastic about our Planet Earth topic this month! We have explored the polar regions, the rainforest, the desert and ocean life and have so enjoyed learning about the different animals and wildlife that can be found there. We have created our very own Planet Earth outside our classroom and the children have even drawn their own diagrams of the layers of the ocean! We built our own habitats for polar bears and arctic foxes too. Sir David Attenborough would surely be impressed? As ever, the children have had fabulous questions that we have had lots of fun investigating like "How can sea cucumbers survive on the ocean floor?" (~Keir) and "What would happen if Planet Earth turned into an oval?" (~Aodhan).

In addition to all of our wonderful questions about Earth, the children have been learning all about how we can look after our planet too. We know that walking to school, recycling and picking up our rubbish are small things that we can do to help.

We have been investigating the impact of the weather with our very own puddle investigations. With the very wet weather this month, we took to the playground to measure some puddles and predict whether we thought that the puddles would get bigger or smaller... Mila quickly hypothesised that the puddles would get bigger because Daddy had told her it was to rain all the way to her birthday (the next day!). Some children thought the puddle might get smaller as the sun might make it disappear. It was so wet that we had to put our measurements on hold for a few days, and in the end discovered that we were all right! The puddles were much bigger as the rain tumbled down, but eventually became smaller and disappeared. What super investigation skills we have!

What's next...

This month, we will start to look a little further afield from Planet Earth, up into space. The children are so excited to learn about the different planets in our solar system and are very much looking forward to our school trip to the Science Centre too.

For Literacy, we will be delving into visualising and sequencing activities. Next week, we will begin a new program of DLL (Daily Literacy Learning). This is a whole class approach to teaching skills for reading and writing, which we will carry out every day together. We will take part in daily activities to help to strengthen our reading strategies and knowledge of common and tricky words to support us in our learning.

In Maths, alongside our work developing knowledge of the operations of number, we will also be exploring money, time and measure.

As always, your support with Home Learning activities, reading together for the pleasure of a good story and taking opportunities to talk about number wherever you can at home are truly appreciated!

Up, up and away!

We are so excited for our Science Centre trip on the 17th November! Thank you so much to our parent helper volunteers, the school office should be in touch soon to confirm arrangements.
