How is AEP different from some of the other programs? Cogito, Academic Challenge?

How many students will you take?
Each year is a little different. We currently have 3 classes of AEP students in grade 7 and 8, and 2 classes in grade 9. We will work with families to ensure everyone that meets the criteria is successful in their application.
What marks do I need? Or what is the application criteria?
Marks are not the only determining factor, however we do believe that past students have been successful with primarily A’s and B’s and possibly the occasional C. Students should also posses:
A commitment towards an academic mindset
A strong work ethic
And have a parental and student commitment to support academic work habits and conditions in the classroom
Kate Chegwin is not my designated school, can I still apply?
Yes, and you will be successful in applying if you meet the above criteria.
How many options do students get?
All our grade 7 students take their 4 core classes in the morning and then have their options/PE/Language classes in the afternoon. Through the Trimester system that we plan on using next year, this will mean that all students will receive 5 options over the span of the whole year. Option selections will happen towards the end of April.
Why is it now called AEP, and there is no longer Pre-AP?
Edmonton Public Schools chose to discontinue the use of the Pre-AP name so they could create their own locally developed program rather than buying into a program. This allows us to continue using the same great things that Pre-AP offered, and also add our own focus.
What High School programs does AEP lead into?
AEP leads well into any of the academic streams in High School. Many of our students are successful in pursuing either the IB or AP courses and also in being accepted into Old Scona. We have a good relationship with Old Scona and they come present to our Grade 9 students in our academic programs every year.
Is there an opportunity to move into or out of the Program?
Yes. The majority of our students love AEP and want to continue in it. Some students try joining AEP in either grade 8 or grade 9 after seeing what the grade 7 program is like. We often have movement between the programs based on interest and best fit for the student.
