Science inspires a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world. Studying the relationships between science, technology and society can help you understand how and why things work. You might even make discoveries that improve yourself and the world.
At Dr. Anne Anderson High School, all sciences students are scientists. From this perspective, students can both explore concepts taught from a discovery approach, and make connections between all sciences by processing concepts from a unifying lens.
Our teachers strive to diversify lessons by providing multiple ways and opportunities for students to learn and demonstrate their learning. These opportunities include lab activities and investigations, peer learning and teaching, projects and research assignments, as well as innovative lesson delivery using the latest technologies.
Science 10 is the prerequisite for all the academic sciences. In other words, you will need to complete Science 10 before advancing to other science courses. Science 10 provides you with an overview of the biological, chemical, physical and earth sciences, as well as an awareness of the connections between the sciences.
Biology 20 and 30 explores how living organisms interact with each other and within their systems. Biology 20 focuses on energy and matter exchange and is a prerequisite for Biology 30. Biology 30 emphasizes adaptation and change.
Chemistry 20 and 30 examines matter and how it interacts on a molecular level. You will get a chance to explore and understand the natural world and see chemistry’s influence on your everyday life.
Physics 20 and 30 examines matter and energy and their interactions. You will study the underlying physics principles behind natural phenomena.
Science 20 and 30 explores concepts related to physics, biology, chemistry and earth sciences. Biology 20, Chemistry 20 or Physics 20 can be used as prerequisites for Science 30.
Science Transitions 14/24 fast tracks students through Science 14/24 to prepare students for further study in Science 10 typically in the next semester. This course is one time block in the schedule as students are fast tracked through both courses in one 5-credit scheduled time (but will receive 10 credits).
Science 24 includes topics in biology, chemistry and physics you can apply in your daily life. These courses allow you to meet the credit requirements for an Alberta High School Diploma. Students who earn credits in Science 14 can register for this course.
Advanced Placement™ (AP) designated science courses (in Biology, Chemistry and Physics) expand the provincial course to also prepare the student for the associated AP exam and recognition as an introductory university-level course.
To earn an Alberta High School Diploma, students must complete either Science, Biology, Chemistry or Physics at the 20 level OR both Science 14 and 10.

Shad Canada - A month-long program for grade 10 & 11s. Pan-Canadian classrooms with university level STEAM and entrepreneurship content and access to mentors.
APEGA Science Olympics - Interactive, inter-school, engineering and geoscience events for students in Grades 1 to 12 that take learning beyond the classroom.
University of Alberta High School Physics Labs - Student experience working with specialized lab equipment at the University of Alberta to reinforce and extend their classroom learning.
