At DAAHS we approach language instruction in a comprehensive 21st-century way. Students may continue to study Canada’s other official language through French-9Y as a Second Language or begin to learn a new language by enrolling in Spanish-3Y Language and Culture.
Students are exposed to a multitude of different resources, material and media. Course material is developed for appropriate language level, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). With the intent to expose students to a wide range of learning styles. Fully addressing all four major components of language acquisition: oral production, listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing production.
When you leave our courses, our hope is that you will have developed a love for the language as well as appreciation for the diverse cultures. After 9 years in French you will be able to function competently in Francophone communities; and after 3 years of Spanish, you will begin to communicate and develop an appreciation for the diversity of the Spanish speaking world.
French as a Second Language 9-year is the continuation of a student’s academic journey through the French-speaking world as they develop their language skills, and cultural & intercultural awareness. Students should have taken French as a Second Language since Grade 4.
Spanish Language & Culture 3-Year is for students beginning to learn Spanish with a focus on interaction, interpretation and the production of the Spanish language. No previous Spanish learning (courses) are required as prerequisites.
Both French as a Second Language and Spanish Language and Culture contribute to the diploma requirement for option courses.
Throughout the languages course series at DAAHS you will have opportunities to connect with cultural experiences and groups across the city, and welcome expert visitors and culture bearers into our classrooms. You will have the opportunity to explore food from regions around the world, connect with media, and current trends. We build relationships with other language students and teachers in the city, our junior high feeder classes, and through virtual exchanges among Francophone and Spanish-speaking areas.
We look forward to providing students with the opportunity to engage with cultural events taking place throughout our city where students can take part to further develop their language competencies.
Students may also wish to take part in Alberta Education student exchanges program, to further their exposure to the language and culture they are learning.
