I’ve always enjoyed the quiet, I find it’s most enjoyable when I get to plunge as deep as 4000ft and not be seen. It’s one way to hide- although I don’t have much to hide from. When you’re at the top of the food chain, everybody fears you, all but one.
The Killer Whale- or the Orca- is a vicious beast who kills for sport. You wouldn’t want to cross one of their paths, believe me.
Leatherback turtles don’t come with many adaptations to hide. But oh, how I get jealous of our land-dwelling relatives, being able to use a hard shell to hide. That's where we get our name, being a softshell turtle without scales to protect ourselves- being 7ft can come in handy. Plus, no one wants to fight 900 pounds of pure muscle.
Alas, I must go now. Migration is long and exhausting- catch you later.!
Yum! That school of fish over there looks delicious. Ugh, I need to swim quicker! Om nom nom. The fish swim and squirm as my big mouth crushes them. Yum! I hope there’s more near. Ooh maybe around that reef over there.
Oh boy. Is that? Oh my gosh. It’s an orca. I can’t outswim that. Maybe it didn’t seeme? Quick around the corner, zooooooom. I’ve gotta get lower and quick. I feel the rough sand beneath me. Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. More sand! Wiggle, wiggle. Woosh! Oh! Thank goodness he went right past me. I don’t think it sees me. Uh oh. Why is it coming back? I must not be covered enough. Quick! I gotta go. Right around that corner. Go,go, go. No way am I out-swimming this guy. YES!
I see a small cave in the reef. Faster! I need to go deeper. Wiggle, wiggle. Oh, I really hope he can’t fit in here. Woo hoo! I made it. He can’t get me! I think I’m going to wait a little longer just to be safe. Ooh. Yum! That school of fish over there looks delicious.
In the tropical waters of Hawaii, I’m always competing against the current of the ocean, finding rainbow colored corals to move into and food. I scan around for a coral to latch onto. Those weird, but horrifying gargantuan blue gray things come at me everytime, so I need to flee my house once in a while. Usually I’m alone because I don’t really need to hang out with my friends. That’s when they come.
I thrust my fins and push with my whole might. Look, I got this hook that is basically my spine, which is really effective and awesome. I move between my house and hook onto it, which is the corals. Haaaaha!, I thought. The stupid shark couldn’t get me cause I wedged myself and I’m now safe. I unhook and let the water pull me back. Bro got an IQ of 1, I thought. The corals are my house and my hero. Now if you’re wondering about an unexpected situation… like what if there are no corals in an area where I am? Well I got this thing called Camouflage, which lets me turn into different colors. That’s why if you search me up, you’ll see different kinds of me. My friends and I tend to stick with the colors of black, yellow, and gray. I figured out how to do this when I was young and saw other animals that I think are weird, changing colors.
My adaptations are also pretty cool because I have 14 chisel sharp pointy teeth. My teeth are this sharp because I need to crack open crabs. I would need to bite real hard to break open that shell and start chewing. My eyes look funny, but the way they are, actually helps with scanning my surroundings. Part of my name, which is the ending, means that I have a snout like a pig. My snout is handy and is used for sniffing my food. Now you can laugh at me, but I’m always looking for food and you know what helps me find it, yeah that’s right my snout. This also helps me find food around small spaces too. Hawaii has a lot of crustaceans and shrimps and corals hence why I live there. There’s also my fins that help me swim faster from those stupid gargantuan blue-gray things. You want to know something cool? I can float without moving and glide backwards. I have a lot of experience in hiding and being in my habitat.
As I swim across the bottom of my cold lake looking for some dinner Uh Oh! I see one of my biggest predators, the carp fish. I try to change my color to hide in the dark green leaves and in the rocks. My camouflage didn't work. The carp fish is still coming after me. I Crawl under a large rock so it can't get me. As I squish my slimy cartilage body under the rock it feels like my organs are gonna get crushed. But that's okay I can always regrow them Phew. Finally I am safe but I didn't get to eat so I am still hungry. I stay underneath my big rock all night. Until tomorrow. I wake up to the sun shining bright into the water. It blinds me so I leave my rocks to go and hide in with the vegetation where I can camouflage as well as in the mud at the bottom of the lake which is where I stay most of the time to hunt. I hide all day still hungry from not eating for a few days but atleast im safe from my predators for the day. Now all of my worries are about tonight and my next meal.
