I swim through the dark sea I live in. There was nothing in sight. No other Goblin Sharks in sight, not like I need any of them anyway… Suddenly, there was a feeling inside my stomach. It rumbled. My stomach rumbled demanding I eat something immediately. I started to swim faster and faster by the second trying to find something I could eat in this lonely deep sea but I can’t find anything. This is so stupid.
Suddenly I felt something. A feeling in the front of my snout. Everytime I feel that it means there's food! I swam about 8 feet away. Trying my best to hide from the food. I went a bit deeper into the water. My fins got darker as I went deeper into the water.
A minute or two later I noticed a light. The light had a wire attached to it. Yes, it's food! I remember eating that type of food before but that was so long ago. I shift to behind the food and slowly swim toward it as stealthy as I can.
I attempted to attract absolutely no attention at all.
After I was about 3-4 inches away from the fish I extended my jaw out as quick as I possibly could and caught the food. The food fought for its life swinging its stupid light all over my face.
I bit down with my skinny long teeth. The moving stopped and the sea became quiet again. I started to swim away while enjoying my food.
I stop myself and look at the sun, it is going down, I think I should go get some rest. I walk towards my den, it seems like it is asking for me. I look behind me to see the sun, but all I saw was the white fur, I look up and see the cunning face of the fox. I shake so hard as if I was struck by lightning! I start running in the other direction while I’m being chased. It’s like one of those cop and robber chases in the movies, but there is no cop, only 2 robbers. I go inside a log hole barely 3 centimeters wide, the fox can’t seem to decide where I went, he is clueless. I hop out of the hole with confidence, and the fox is right there, looking in the other direction. I try to stay still like a statue in the snow, he turns around and stares at me. I think I’m dead, but he just walks away, like I was invisible. He didn’t see me because of my white coat! It saved me again, just like every time.
Pulsating through the ocean as I rely on the currents, I float around searching for food. As I wait patiently for my prey to appear, I continue to drift in the water. Suddenly, I sense something, a weird tingly feeling rushes through me, and a wave of fear and panic hits me hard. Something's wrong but I just don’t know what. A threat maybe? A predator? Realization strikes me as yet another wave of anxiety and what I think is adrenaline courses through me, but of course, I can’t tell since I don’t have a heart. Due to my unique and simple anatomy, I also don’t have eyes, but my special nervous system allows me to feel and sense everything that’s happening around me.
The water shakes with every inch the predator moves, a specific vibration that I know belongs to my worst enemy: the vicious Leatherback Turtle. Oh no… Not the Leatherback Turtle, oh please no. Why, out of all the animals that want to eat me, it has to be the LeatherBack Turtle…? My cells and jellyfish body alert me that it’s swimming towards me, and quickly. I’m terrified, I don’t know what to do! What if I become its next meal? Okay, okay, I need to relax, it’s going to be okay, I tell myself as I remember I’m transparent. I have nothing to worry about, I’m practically almost invisible. I’ve escaped countless times before, and I’m sure I can do it again, besides being see-through has its benefits. But then again what if it isn’t fooled by my camouflage? What if its giant teeth seep through my delicate soft body? Will it see me? Even as I try reassuring myself, nothing but worry and stress cloud my thoughts.
I feel its proximity, especially as it swims closer to my hidden body. The water begins to shake more intensely as I feel the paddles of the Leatherback Turtle get stronger, it almost feels as if it's right next to me. I freeze instantly, becoming aware of every inch of my body. I try my best to stay perfectly still, knowing very well that the slightest motion could give me away. Even though I have short, thin, and hard to see tentacles, I can’t take the risk. I try to avoid moving my tentacles, fearing that they may accidentally touch and come into contact with my predator, which could result in me being swallowed whole by the overly massive mouth of one of my biggest threats. I feel a surge of nervousness, as the water is suddenly eerily still, too still considering there’s a monstrous predator looming around. What if it sees right through my tricks? Why don’t I feel it moving? Is it searching for me, looking for a suitable prey to attack? Where’d it go, is it still beside me? I wonder if it’s scanning and observing the water? It’s like everything’s stopped and slowed down. It feels as the seconds tick by slowly as I wait for what’s about to happen next. Oh my god… the paddling picks up again, instantly startling me. As the sounds and paddling of the Leatherback Turtle become faint and faded, I realize that it’s surprisingly moving in the opposite direction, completely away from me. My stiff, tense body begins to relax and simmer down. I’m okay! I’m alright and survived! I can’t believe it!! I’m in utter shock and relief as I realize that I’m truly okay, it didn’t notice me, all thanks to my incredibly clear body. Oh my god, I’m beyond grateful that my transparent body saved my life once again. I can breathe again! It’s truly unbelievable that the Leatherback Turtle obliviously swam right past me, even though I was straight up in the open, without anywhere to hide. Even so my body still managed to protect me from danger by using this powerful, unique, and extremely useful adaptation to help me survive.
What’s that weird sensation? I wonder to myself for a quick second before I realize it’s small zooplankton swarming not too far from me. Mmmm… YUM! I haven’t eaten yet… might as well do so now! I think to myself as I get ready to put this outstanding adaptation to good use, to help me hunt and obtain delicious food.
