This Round's Question...
Good Luck to all! Happy learning!
It's hard for meals to hide from me. I hunt mostly during the day, but you can't stop the munchies at night. My favourite food is lemmings, but I can eat many more things like seabirds, fish, carrion (dead carcasses) and rabbits... I fight with Arctic foxes and larger birds for food, but I can migrate (move) to find more food.
My large eyes have fantastic depth perception (see distance). I can focus on things meters away. Around my beak, I have sensitive whisker-like hairs to distinguish close objects. You can't hide. Maybe, you think you can sneak behind my back? No way! My eyes can't move, but my head can turn 270° both ways!
Can you hear that? I detect something moving beneath the snow. It's a lemming!
I track the rodent's exact location. The perfect grab, waiting to happen. I swoop low to the ground. It can't hear me, my feathers silence the wind flowing through them. I don't need to flap my wings often, they're huge enough to hold my small body weight.
I pump my strong, long legs, into the snow and grab the lemming with my sharp talons and squeeze. I tear some fur off and swallow it whole. When I get all of the nutrients from my meal, I'll regurgitate (spit out) bones, fur/feathers, and teeth. I bite some snow to stay hydrated.
Okapis spend the majority of their days roaming paths through the Ituri RainForest searching for food. This animal is a herbivore (meaning it’s diet contains lots of greens and fruits) which means it’s a primary consumer. The Snowy Owl's main source of food is the lemming (small rodent that lives in the arctic), unlike the Okapi which has multiple resources for food since it lives in the ituri rainforest which is filled with lots of trees and plants.
The Okapi uses it’s very long tongue to bring food down such as leaves, twigs, shoots, fruits, berries, as well as other plants in the rainforest. They sometimes will eat fungi and even plants that are poisonous to other animals and humans. Okapis are also known for eating a reddish clay that provides them with the essential salt and minerals for its plant-based diet. As they wander through the Ituri rainforest they consume 45-60lbs of food each day and us humans only eat 3-5lbs a day .
ROUND 3-" Which organism has the BEST adaptations and behaviors for obtaining food and ingesting it?"
Welcome to A. Blair McPherson School's March Mammal Madness! We appreciate you helping out in selecting the organism that has adaptations that enable it to rule over all! This is a student project that helps us learn more about Biodiversity. Students selected their organism, researched about adaptations, its niche and more! Each round will have a different question. Please select the organism whose description BEST answers the question!
Thank you for participating! You may only vote ONCE per account, but you can vote as often as you are able!
