This Round's Question...
Good Luck to all! Happy learning!
I sit, waiting at night for a helpless small fish to swim by. My bright red and white colors help me blend in with my coral reef home off the coast of Jamaica. My species lives in many parts of the world, because we are an invasive species, but this is my home. Here I am on top of the food chain and nothing can stop me. I am the apex predator. No one dares mess with me, not even a petrifying, barbaric shark. My bright colors that outline my body are the reason why I am able to survive is because predators tend to go for animals that are dull like the barreleye fish, which have no camouflage at all. Not only that but because of my camouflage predators cannot see me because I live in the coral reefs which my colors match and have allowed me to adapt to becoming the vertex predator. Nothing escapes my grasp. I disappear into my niche where my food cannot see me and pounce at the right moment to catch the little fish. Though I'm a slow sea fish and I depend on my camouflage and my lightning fast reflexes and my bright array of colors to get prey. On the other hand the barreleye fish is super boring. All it has is a transparent head. OMG!!!! SO AMAZING THAT IT BORES MEEEEEEE!!!!!! Compared to me the barreleye fish is a joke and I, the red Lionfish is the dragon of the sea. Vote for the best. Vote for the red Lionfish.
The barreleye lives in the black sea, where the monsters of the sea live. This fish is almost invisible in the water; you can barely see it, their dark brown black colour blends in with the pitch black sea.All you can see is their glowing head! Imagine seeing a floating head in the water!
You are probably thinking wouldn't an animal go for the head, well these fish don't move a lot and mostly use their eyes. Their eyes can spot the bioluminescent glow of jelles right above them and can spot other animals close by using its fascinating eyes, it can rotate its eyes in almost every direction! Their eyes can also spot faint silhouettes of animals nearby, no animal can come close to them without being noticed. This fish is like the one kid in hide and seek you can never find, it can see where the animals are and knows exactly where to hide and blend in.The flat fins they have make them motionless in the water and give them really precise steering making them really quiet when they are moving. The barreleye can blend in with the environment it lives in so animals nearby cant see them there.
I'm watching over the other Chimps today. I am the bodyguard. My nest of twigs and soft leaves is built towards the bottom of the trees, unlike the others. I am the protector. I am seen as strong, and even attractive to the females while I am completing my job as a male. Suddenly, I hear sounds. Branches breaking? I spot some patches of yellow and brown. A leopard. It's a threat. A predator. Our troop is at risk. And it is my duty to protect. I hoot and scream to let the other troop members know that there is danger. Some of us decide to run. Others climb up the trees. With our long and lean arms, swinging across the forest is easy. We can get through this. I know. As we sweep through the whole forest, the creature is confused. He can get to the tops of the forest like us, but we are quicker. Finally accepting defeat, the Leopard retreats, the danger is gone. We are safe. I did my job. I kept everyone safe. And I will continue to do so. We, Chimps don't get attacked a lot, because most of the animals fear us, but it is rare for an attack to take place. Like how it happened now, but we have means of defending too. We will attack if necessary. This time, we didn’t. We will only attack if we can’t escape and have no choice but to face the danger.
The extraordinary species of Chimps creates convenient nests out of soft leaves and twigs high up into trees in order to avoid predators. These nests are used by them at night so they can be fully protected while sleeping. This clever strategy of theirs has shielded them from situations that would have probably resulted in something terrible. A crime scene would’ve been created, and that’s definitely not the way Chimpanzees want to roll. The Chimpanzees above average long arms (1.5 times their height!), are the key to transportation across the forest. Escaping from any threats with those long arms doesn’t even make Chimps break a sweat! Climbing high up into the trees is the perfect effortless method to deal with danger. The majorly clever Chimpanzees are very mindful while picking places for their homes. Their habitat is crowded with trees, which makes it easier for them to climb up and hide in order to protect themselves from land animals. Chimpanzees take massive responsibility for each other and make loud noises in numerous situations to alert their troops so that they can get away from danger even though a lot of their predators can climb trees. Most of the time, Chimpanzees present themselves as a very vigorous animal. They bravely face the danger head on and fight their predators.
As I jump from tree to tree with my gripy hands, I wonder if I will survive. I look around and I see my pack of troops running as well, but they actually found a place to hide. When I look up, I find a vicious hungry Goshawks smirking in the air trying to find me. The frozen trees filled with snow making it a bit harder to climb. My own frosted cold breath is hitting me in the face, temporarily blinding myself but that’s least of my concern right now. I can’t find anywhere to hide, everybody around me is gone, hiding unlike me. I go in full panic mode. I can’t hide anywhere,“My only option is death” I say at the top of my lungs. Then I come out of full panic mode and I remember that this happens so often that I have memorized every hiding location which is pretty handy when it comes to these problems. Such as under this big rock in a hole that I can find in but the Goshawks can't. If for whatever reason I can't find a hiding spot, I am the flash but I climb trees and just a bit fatter then he is but more handsome.
All though I might not be the greatest at hiding and am insanely quick. I am in front of you and before you blink I am gone, almost like a ghost. Unlike that large chimpanzee looking thing, I am lighter than it by 23 kg. That other dude is like a tank. While I am peacefully climbing around, I can feel a giant earthquake coming, as I get closer to the top of the tree. I looked down hoping the ground was not splitting open and it wasn’t. For 5 straight minutes I think to myself what could that be. I couldn't think of anything so I slowly came down. I looked around and saw that caused the earthquake. A large chimpanzee the size of an elephant staring back at me.
You know, it's funny how all these other animals think they stand a chance. The Proboscis monkey is the full package. Majestic, unique, and not to mention, they’re packing in more ways than one. I mean, Red Ruffed Lemur? Really? How pathetic, that even science itself, gave an ugly animal, and even uglier name. Stand clear and make way, because Nasalis larvatus is the new big thing in this small town.
This distinctive long-tailed monkey is known as an arboreal primate species (lives in trees.) They are secluded to the island of Borneo and its beautiful rivers, mangroves, and swamps. These animals prefer staying inland and never straying far, if they do, only for their beloved meals. This endemic genus conceals itself in thick tree branches over water, and sometimes on the ground next to the river itself. Unlike most animals, the proboscis monkey always has two escape routes available. The long-nosed mammal has strong hind legs which enable them to run and scale trees exceptionally faster than most monkeys. This physical advantage also allows them to leap from tree to tree great distances apart. Did you know that not only is our monkey fast, (furious too,) they’re one of the only few species that can swim? Yes, swim, you heard me. With their partially webbed toes, they can swim large distances to escape predators. If prey like a jaguar were to come and chase them, these geniuses could easily jump into the water and paddle away. The Slow Loris can’t compete, because the last time I checked, the only thing they did when prey was nearby, was freeze, unmoving. No wonder it's called the "slow" Loris.
Ever seen a lemur climb up a tree and wonder why is it up there? That's because they're hiding from 2 of their worst nightmares, the brown viscous Fossa and the fierce long winged Hawk. These furry little animals with soft broad fingers and toes climb up trees to hide from these two alarming animals. Their whole entire life revolves around hiding from their predators. Female red ruffed lemur build well-hidden nests for their cute little minors. They blend into the trees and like to stay elevated when the predators are after them. They also have zero chance of falling out because their long tail helps them keep their balance. Red ruffed lemurs also have lots of stamina and are high energy animals, so when they run it’s nearly impossible to catch them. A fun fact: The red ruffed lemur can jump 25 feet in the air or across trees to get away from the predators ready to eat these little guys alive. 25 feet, that’s like 5 of me! That’s not all that they can do, their dark red fur coat helps them camouflage making them almost invisible to see them. It almost reminds me of the saying, now you see me, now you don't! When they seem like they are in danger, they will use animal calls to tell each other if a predator is coming and use other well socialized lemurs to their advantage by listening to them and their animal calls too. These clever animals surely deserve a vote. Don’t you think so too?
slow loris have opposable thumbs and specialized blood vessels that can give extra oxygen to their muscles, which allows them to hang on tree for hours without getting tired this is extremely important when their is predator (snakes, changeable hawk-eagle,orangutans)on the ground they have to avoid, slow loris move slowly and quietly they can also became motionless when threatened, their slo movement is very distinctive to their species. Their fillable back allows them to hang in odd angles ( upside down) in the leaves to avoid dangers
I the mighty orca has no need for silly hiding unlike some other animals in this world. I’m a humongous member of the dolphin family and a natural born predator. I hunt my prey with my amazing abilities. As an awesome creature, I use some of my strengths to actually hunt prey like the bowhead whale for instance. Even with their adaptations the Bowhead whale still is no match for me, the great orca or more commonly known as I’m more commonly called the killer whale to most people. Even though I have no need for ways to hide from predators seeing as I’m on the top of the food chain in my ecosystem I do have extra precautions and ways to remain hidden if the time ever came that I was being threatened.
I have massive lungs that allow me to dive incredibly deep under the surface of the water and they allow me to hold my breath for up to 4 minutes! Along with my super strong lungs I have a mostly black body that allows me to hide within my environment becoming almost invisible from a top down or side view. To add to my amazing capabilities I also can take a ton more nitrogen than you humans and while that may not sound like anything special to you in reality it’s amazing! When you humans breathe in too much nitrogen it can cause trouble breathing, limited visibility and other things too! Since I can take way more nitrogen than you humans can it allows me to stay down much longer and go down much deeper for longer periods of time! Now while I the orca is not a predator of hippopotamuses if you were to put a hippopotamus in the harsh environment orcas like me thrive in, it wouldn’t survive for long and it would just end up sinking right to the bottom or get eaten by me first!
I’m not fast by any means, only 20km per hour, but that doesn't matter. I only have ONE predator, the Killer whale and it takes an entire pod to even hurt me. They may be faster than me, and there may be more than me, but the dark Arctic waters hide me because of my dark skin. If they were to ever find me I could just dive, I can dive deeper than any orca, and for far longer. They can only hold their breath for 15 minutes while I can hold mine for 40. I have more than enough time because of the biological mirrors in my eyes which let me see anything coming a mile away this gives me the time I need to swim to colder waters where the orca’s can't follow. Wait whats that….. Looks like a-a-a a ORCA! Shoot better start diving, thank god they passed right by me, safe again. They may be faster, but the Killer whales will NEVER catch me.
My nose, ears and eyes are on the top of the world, well water is the top of my world. I can spend up to 5 minutes underwater and walk if I need to chase down a canoe in lake turkana’s gritty water and break it in half with one bite if danger is opposed they won't even see me coming or maybe, they will because of my speed and size that create huge waves while I charge at them. While I hide in the water I can peak out without anyone noticing me, and even if they do they can really not do anything to me because of my bullet proof skin that protects me from anything that they can hit me with, well maybe not a rocket launcher.
ROUND 1 -" Which organism has the BEST hiding adaptation?"
Welcome to A. Blair McPherson School's March Mammal Madness! We appreciate you helping out in selecting the organism that has adaptations that enable it to rule over all! This is a student project that helps us learn more about Biodiversity. Students selected their organism, researched about adaptations, its niche and more! Each round will have a different question. Please select the organism whose description BEST answers the question!
